3 Cars all crunched up in lane 3 about a mile from the westbound Gatso in Greenford.
Merc followed by an Alfa and in 3rd position was a BMW!

Nicely held up the traffic for a while on the way home this evening at 7.30

Was the BMW trying to move the people out of his lane?

I thankfully don't know the A40. What is the problem with this road ? Isn't this where Tonyrec and chums regularly scrape body parts ?

Does anyone have any suggestions about what can be done to reduce the frequency and severity of incidents on the A40 apart from cloning Tonyrec and putting more trafpols out there, which is sadly unlikely at the moment ?

Yeah, everytime i seem to log on to PH the A40 seems to appear in some way related to an accident.

Dont think I have ever driven on this road, I think it may be avoided!

Perhaps if Tonyrec spent less time surfing the Internet and more time surfing the A40 there would be less accidents.

Only joking Tony

The A40 in to London is a continuation of the M40. The road is mostly 3 lanes and has frequent sliproads. It has lots of slight bends, dips and brows.

The road is mostly incredibly busy - and isn't helped by the Gatso's (which IMHO hinder traffic flow). People doing 45-50 in the 50limit hit the brakes and the result is stationary traffic further back.

When the road empties it's a great driving road. But there are a lot of bad drivers on there and it does have a 50limit or 40limit. So you have people trying to make progress and people sticking to the limit.

It's a dangerous cocktail.

Have absolutely no idea what the problem is with the A40.

Its got some dodgy little bits here and there but these are usually so slow moving they present no danger, on the whole its a nice wide quick road when there is no traffic.

I am utterly convinced that as soon as some people get inside the M25 they lose all ability to control a motor car.

And so the new policy of no BMW baiting rears its head. Sound the bell and let the parishes be told!

The A40 has a couple of silly bits of road design, like east-bound, a set of lights around a just corner that you can't see until you get around the corner. If you don't know they are there you end up slamming on your brakes as you go around the corner. Think about it, braking harshly + corners + wet roads don't mix. Also east bound, after it narrows into 2 lanes it then goes back into 5 (1 goes left, 1 goes right and 3 go straight on) and this always causes confusion. It's just not a well designed road and too much traffic uses it. Guaranteed accidents.

Tony - as you're online - why do you think there are so many crashes on the A40.

I have my own theory - but it's not PC enough to be printed on here.

There are any number or reasons why there are so many crashes on the A40.

You can blame slow moving traffic and fast moving traffic at various times of the day.

Most certainly the late evening/nightime crashes are quite easy to explain.
A lot of people are in going home mode and its the first fast road that they come up against after leaving the Capital.
They have just had a nice evening out and are looking forward to getting home and into bed.......tiredness does Kill, sadly.

In the morning, our biggest problem is with Motorcycles. Ive lost count of the number of dead over the years that practice that fine art of filtering. Sadly, the filtering speeds are around the 50mph mark in stationary traffic.People just dont pay enough attention and really are fed up with sitting in the bumper to bumper traffic and want to get to work asap. They will cut corners to save a few seconds....with obvious results.

Lastly, and more importantly, very bad driving.
I would love to know how many vehicles use this road in a 24hr period....it will be thousands. Sadly, it only takes one numpty to show his true colours and you have a serious accident.

That is my view, but dont forget...we also have a large number of slow speed 'damage onlys' in the rush hour periods so all in all it certainly keeps us very busy.

I drove onto the A40 from Hanger langer on the way out of town to Buckinghamshire, and i couldn't believe the way people were trying to play bumper cars.
I think it was a good thing that i wasnt towing my mini digger other wise im sure someone would of been into the side of it.
Looking in my mirrors and cars are trying to underpass/overtake me (merc sprinter van)and that is only on the single lane slip road.
Glad i dont drive it everyday.
