Won this on ebay, no T&T but in decent nick, needs a bit of welding near the pedal box but that's it (I think).

It was ridiculously cheap!

This will be the 2nd series motor I've owned and I think I'll maybe just tax and test it and sell it on for a for a quick profit. Or I might keep it and even get round to putting a v8 in it - I always wanted to do that to my old ex-mod 109 but never quiet got round to it...

I know the v8 mounts come up on ebay now and again but does anybody know where I can buy new ones?

Have you considered fitting a 200 tdi? Much simpler, cheaper, similar power to a 3.5 and probably about as much as the drivetrain wants.

Hmmm, is the 200tdi a straight swap?

I found a few places selling the v8 conversion bits and they're £300. Need to modify the bulkhead too though...

A 200Tdi should be easier in some respects and one of the engine mounts bolts straight up. But some complain of bad vibrations, so I've heard people say about using latter mounts as per a Disco chassis.

Biggest restriction is room at the front. You'll either need to swap to an electric fan or run a Defender style front panel and rad grill.

Making room for the turbo can be an issue, Defender 200Tdi's had the turbo mounted high above the motor, whereas Disco's had them low below the exhaust manifold. So depending on which engine you start with depends on how much hassle.

Personally I think a TDI swap is a better swap than a V8. Much better mpg with similar performance, better hp if you tweak the injector pump.

Aye but if I do keep it and convert it, it will be a pure toy - lucky if it does 500 miles a year so mpg won't matter - v8 burble will! hehe

That is the choice to make. biggrin

Just depends what you want to use it for really. I know of a few people with V8 Series motors. For off roading though I'd opt for the diesel, less trouble with carbs and no worries in the water.

Yeah, I won't be offroading it much, just pottering about on the ranch. It'll be handy for taking crap to the tip and taking the dog to the beach etc....

That's my excuse anyway!

I might even replace the roof with a canvas tilt...

There is quite a bit of information on the 200 install here.

I've had a v8 series and they are fun, especially as a teenager, but most of the engines available will be old and worn, and probably run like a bag of nails unless you spend a fair bit of time and money. The v8 exhaust is a pain to execute unless you can buy one these days.

My feeling is that even a worn tdi will always start and run the same no mater how long you've left it as long as you have a decent battery.

In that case I'd go the V8 route biggrin

Biggest hassle as mentioned above is finding a descent 3.5 engine. You could use a 4.0 or 4.6 but the axles and gearbox won't thank you much and may end up depositing themselves on the road behind you if you give them too much abuse.

You could go for a LT77 5 speed and LT230 transfer case swap too, but that's a lot more work and money.

I've got plenty of tiem to decide, the 2.25 starts and runs fine.

I'll get it MOT'd with the original engine and see what i want to do. Thanks for the advice though chaps, although I've owned a few landies I'm no expert...
