Britain's Worst Camera?
ABD locates Britain's most cynically placed speed camera lurking in North Wales
The Association of British Drivers has been reviewing speed cameras around the country and has identified what it claims is the most cynically placed. It's in North Wales, on the edge of the village of Greenfield. Placed on the A548 Flintshire coast road it lurks in wait behind a railway bridge on a left hand bend at the start of a 30 limit.
Whilst the placing of a camera in a 30mph limit wouldn't cause much affront to most people, the choice of that limit has also been called into question. An ABD spokesman said, "As drivers approach the disused railway bridge they notice a sudden drop from an already questionable 40mph limit, to just 30mph. There is no apparent reason for this reduction, no houses, no schools, no warning signs for any unseen hazard."
The speed camera pre-dates the introduction of visibility requirements intended to make cameras act as deterrents, rather than trapping unwary drivers. Although it is now painted yellow, it remains totally hidden to approaching traffic by the bridge and left hand bend. Even the markings on the road are hidden from view.
ABD Spokesman Nigel Humphries said: "The fact that the camera is now painted yellow is irrelevant, it could have a flashing neon sign and would still be hidden from view. This is a clear breach of speed camera guidelines which state that cameras in a 30mph zone should be clearly visible from 60 metres in both directions ."
With the P&O Irish Sea ferry terminal located a few miles up the road at Mostyn, and many services departing at night, the speed camera can be sure of a regular supply of unwary victims.
The Department for Transport has asked drivers to let them know of speed cameras that are sited in the wrong place, or that are not meeting the official criteria.
ABD Chairman Brian Gregory said: "The continued existence of this money grabbing camera is a disgrace. This should be the first camera to be scrapped ."

However a general PR problem with highlighting one case is if that case is solve it can give the impression that the problem is solved.

I think theyll need to remove more than just that one.
Am i the only one thinking that theres a damgae limitation exercise swinging into action here?
Absolutely - they'll take a few down, then put more up and transfer a lot more to talivans.
It'll take a few more cases like the chap in the "Motoring News" section before we get rid of the speeding shite in this country.
I sent them a polite letter thanking them for the fine and the three points and a guarantee that I wont be a regular visitor anymore.
I used to holiday in Wales at least once a year spending a few grand each time. So for a quick £60 profit, they've lost the community alot more.
Then again, maybe they don't want my type (i.e. mostly English but partly Welsh) around. Bless 'em. Makes me proud.
Here in East Brunstromia nor far from this camera no-one thinks to ask why there are only 12 Gatsos in the whole patch - Thats because the Gatso's make a killing for a few weeks and the takings dwindle off. So theres only a few cameras being rotated around the sites
The Scum-in-the vans practice crop rotation - they have many sites which make this camera look Sooooo obvious by comparison. And move around when the locals wise up and the kill rate falters.
Oh and the are almost never at the places that chief apologist Beth Micheson diligently puts up on the website.

Mr C,
Too true.
I have often seen NWP Talivans in Northop and, on checking the rota published in the Daily Post, they were tasked to be in Northop the day previously. Or so they said. Can't be deliberate mis-information, surely!!
I also signed up for e-mail updates on the rota and received one. Then they stopped. They didn't send any more. T
