HELP - they're trying to rip me off (I think)
Discussion
I have a Golf MK 4 GT TDI for commuting (working in Manchester and back home to Edinburgh at weekends)...last week when driving down the power dipped almost like the turbo no longer active.
I switched the ignition off (whilst driving) then back on again and the problem was resolved for another 50 miles.....no hard acceleration...just cruising about 70ish when it happened.
Same happened this Sunday night driving down...94 miles of happy motoring then same problem...happened 3 times and each time I switch off and on it's fine for another 20 or so miles.
The local VW dealership admitted they were at a loss this morning but at lunch had a eureka moment and said...the turbo needs replacing. £1,350 please.......
I'm no mechanic however it seems obvious that if it requires a new turbo because of worn vanes, seals worn etc then fine...however due to the intermittent nature of this coupled with the fact that an off / on corrects it then it surely can't be mechanical and seems more likely to be a sensor, actuator etc etc?!?
Any advice would be great......

Ah, ok then.
To the problem in hand. Do you know anyone locally with VAG COM who could hook it up and check for fault codes?
Alternatively, see if there are any decent VAG specialist local to you and drop it in for them to have a look at it - could be a split boost pipe or anything. I wouldn't bother with the VW main dealer to be honest.

Thanks...There was a garage in Edinburgh that were really helpful and he said the fault code pointed to something electrical (pressure regulator or actuator IIRC) and definately not anything mechanical. To the problem in hand. I'm going to pick the car up now and it's booked into Paterson Diesel in Scotland this Friday. From my description they said they could almost 100% rule out the turbo unit.
I just wanted to see if anyone on here had experienced the same issue.
Thanks again for your response.
Sounds like the turbo to me. Fairly common to fail this way. Amusing the fault code is boost pressure over prescribed limit, or somthing along those lines.
The variable vains stick inside the turbo, causing overboost, ECU see's overboost and limits power (fuel) to prevent engine blow up.
Ignition off/on and resets until the next time the overboost protection cuts in.
Search on here overboost or limp mode you will see lots of similar stories. I must change 5 or 6 turbos a year for exactly this fault.

I would only look at the turbo if i was absolutely 100% sure that all hoses and and the intercooler were sound. I've had the same symptoms on both my S4 and my A2 and all were due to either perished and split hoses or loose connections or in the case of the A2 a disconnected vacuum hose.
