Any roads worth exploring on the way up there? (Otherwise I'll just be boring and stick to M5/M6 the whole way)

If you're in no rush, maybe off the M6 at Macclesfield to the Cat and Fiddle, up to the Snake Pass towards Manchester then back to the M6.

Then another detour through the Lakes. There must be some threads about 'must-do' roads there as I'm not too familiar with the area.

Cheers - I might give that a try if the weather is nice... Showing heavy rain at the moment frown

absolutely miles out of the way and utter st roads pulse. Do not take that route its so far out of your way and so over rated I'll cry if you follow it.

The cat is so over rated its untrue, you'll either be stuck behind some caravan, avoiding the lemming bikers or trying to avoid the police. Its a twisty road, wow, much better around the area but not any use to you. It would add a good 2 hours onto your journey just going out of your way from and to the motorway. Actually just read back and the suggestion is go up to the cat then to the snake, fking uber lols. If you happend to give god good head that morning you might find the snake is empty, otherwise you will be stuck behind dorris and her mr magoo husband, no matter what the day or what the time and over taking, whilst possible, not recommended certainly if you have no knowledge of the road. Split lines indicate you can over take, doesnt mean its the best idea.

Also I do believe now they have installed specs on the cat. There are hundreds of great driving roads but none that come to mind at the minute that are worth going out of your way for and btw that area was my stomping ground in my youth.

If I was you I would completely ignore the suggestion of the Cat or the Snake.

So maybe ambling up the M6 is the way to go.

Probably best not to post anything unless you've got something constructive.

I know pulse, I know the route, I know the area. Saving his time from a wasted trip on the way up is about as constructive as one can get. Though he probably will do the roads anyway wink

The route down quite possibly, back down I'd have said popped over the A roads from Gretna, down through Newcastle, down A1, off at Sheffield then you could cut back over the snake and the cat but there is no escaping the fact these roads are over rated and nowhere near what they used to be.
