Here's a great video of the flat 12 being started after 30 years in a museum.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU0r99fyD0U&fea...

If you go to teamgunnar's channel, there are lots of videos of the restoration and running of the car too.

Thanks goes to these guys for posting the videos...

Apologies if this is a repost, I did a search but couldn't see anything similar.

Am I alone in feeling a little bit surprised that they used easy-start on that? I would just feel too bad squirting that into an engine of that calibre and importance.

On mechanical fuel injection of the period you often need to spray neet fuel down the trumpets to richen up the mixture enough to start a cold engine. I use a wurth pump up spray bottle with fuel in it to help fire up the Kinsler systems. They catch much easier if you preheat the engines before cranking.

My Dad was the Marketing Director of Gulf Oil in the 70's. I always feel connected to the 917 having grown up around them.

Awesome footage getting the engine running and then seeing it on the track.

Cheers

The reason it sounds a little different is because it's an LMK kit running a 3.6 Flat-6 911 engine wink

I would still like one though!

There is at least one road legal factory 917, chassis number 030 was bought by Count Rossi and converted for road use.

Oh well, still an enjoyable ride smile

Looks nice in white doesn't it, and the Sunoco 512 Ferrari in the background sounds nice too,

What a fascinating clip - cheers.

I wish I knew what was going on with engines! What interested me was at the end when it was blipped a little the left bank of the engine seemed to fire before the right (or at least the exhaust on the right was slower at venting the smoke?

Presumably the firing order isn't as odd as that!?

I've been spending most of the evening catching up the restoration, some very interesting stuff and the detail they go into is amazing, I recommend you check out the rest of the series. smile

Thats Ottocar Von Jabobs car, which is indeed a replica. He does however own a real 917/10 as well smile

It's pre connected for rapid deployment if required on the track.

Likewise, really interesting stuff. It's the knowledge of the little details like the door hinges and the history of the various parts of the car via the paint stripping that made it an even better watch. Well done Gunnar, good effort (and what not!! thumbup )

When they started stripping the paint back to the bare fibreglass it makes you realise how little there is to these cars. Some chassis, some fibreglass and a stonking great engine.
Was it my eyes or was the underfloor that thin when it was stripped back that you could see the chassis rails through it?
