Freelander engine warning lamp

Friend of mine has just bought a 2.0L TD Freelander around 98ish I believe. He rang me and asked what the red light on the dash was with an engine pic in the middle, ran fine and no probs otherwise. He rang back today and said the light had gone off but the trip meter and the clock reset theirselves but the car still started fine. Light back on now as well. Any thoughts or cheats for reading fault codes??
