Fine or points
Discussion
No.
In principle yes but it would allow the people who could afford to speed to be able to speed.
I used to know someone local who had a roller, each day he parked on the double yellow lines by the train station, each day he got a £30 parking ticket. He just paid it didn't bother him at all

Just a thought, how many of us would find the scameras "more acceptable", in the mildest sence of the expression, if the law was changed to a fine only, ie NO points.
I would find them 100 per cent acceptable in that case.
It would be a sort of random toll.
I also feel for the good of the UK plod there should be *no* police involvement in talivan or cameras.
It amazes me the police don't insist on this! Would public support be such a bad thing for them?
A lot of people seem to worry far more about the points because of the effect on "tot up" and insurance costs, the present system of both fines and points is the real problem. If we got that sorted out, the scamera partnerships could be honest about the whole thing and say, yes it's your money we want, if you speed, you pay, the police could come out of the loop, repair their relationship with the motoring public, and get on with normal patrol work. The fines could still be disputed, and still be valid as a "speed warning system", I do agree however that those who have better incomes could afford to be more relaxed about fines then those on smaller incomes, but this is a common problem within our society, and one of the reasons we all try to improve our lot, the more you earn, the greater the choice, that's life.
The question therefore may be, instead of fighting to remove camera's should we fight to change the duel fines/points system, then let nature take it's course.

Now, it's nothing more than a scam.
We all know that.
It's not going to change. A tax on fast but safe driving is not an unreasonable position to take up!
It's the points that ruin peoples lives not the fines!
Of course if the fine component was banned the problem would disapear!
Just imagine the looks of glee on the scamera partnerships faces if the points were withdrawn in favour of say a 10% tollerence over a given limit and £50 per mph over, 50 in a 30 limit would cost 17x £50 =£850, and 100mph on a motorway would cost you £1150, makes you think don't it???
Since it clearly IS just about indirect taxation, why not just come clean and admit it?
That way, you would not have to worry about draconian banning measures, just some presumably half decent fines.
The way I see it, if there HAD to be some sort of nanny wrist slapping exercise - for the catharsis of the turds in society - then as long as I could crack 200 along the northerly nether regions of the M6 and it cost less then a Brunters session if spotted, I'd not be too concerned.
Of course, the communists are specifically interested in inflicting their own, innate nastiness on other, less miserable folk and if they can't ban people who don't subscribe to Red Wedge then they will demand inordinate pecuniary retribution.
Feeble people with empty scrotitia.
May they all find incarceration in a Guantanamoic shed.

Uttelry agree!
If the goverment trashed the points and called Talivan an 'avoidable speed based Toll' people would live with it quite happily! Why not?
It's the loss of job, the police involvement and the sanctimonous tw*ts that run it that annoy people!
If the fine was supposed to be a deterrent, it would be in the region of a grand and they would take your car to pay for it. £60 is neither here nor there for most motorists.
What worries me is 4 lapses of concentration (e.g. driving to the conditions, watching for hazards) and the speed creeps up - bang no job

Q... Are we going about things the right way?, let's consider leaving the camera's alone, suggesting up to 5x the current fines, get the scamera partnerships rubbing their hands with glee over the massive income hike, subject only to removing the penalty points from the "offence". They will still have to prove the offence, and we can still fight the fines in the normal way, useing whatever advantage we can muster. The income from fines can then be used for training, re-training, etc, etc, but at least this system is HONEST.
