Hi I am going to buy either of the above only the S3s seem to be out of my price limit,

I would love to have one 5dr leather ,etc only that puts them in the 16k-20k braket

Then theres the golf ,lovely car Iv'e got one (mk4)
Iv'e read somewhere that the early gtis have a weak engine ,or something has to be changed after 30k
Is this right or is it me being fussy

Early Mk1V GTIs have a steering rack fault that should have been recalled.

I;ve never heard of that, purhaps you could find what you read.

I think the S3 is much faster 270bhp. Whats the GTI got????

I've seen S3's from £19k

You'll get into an S3 for 19 but definitely not a Sportback.

None of the S3s are 270 bhp. Every standard car that has been on a dyno has been around the 300 bhp mark (usually between 295 and 300).

Really?
They are quoted as 265bhp and the GTI ed40 is a 240bhp model and then the std GTI is 197bhp.

I'd say these dyno readings take themwith a pinch of salt. Look at their 1/4 mile time or similar 4wd/fwd same power to weight and if its notably faster then your probably righ else those Dyno's are just showing what the owner would like to see / when was that dyno last calibrated???

It's a GTI Edition 30 and it's 230PS (approx 227BHP)

Only the Leon Cupra has 240PS (approx 237BHP) with this engine.

With regards to the actual power put out it will vary from dyno to dyno and VAG engines are notoriously tight when new and get better with a few miles on them.

Although the S3 has more power you also have to remember it's also heavier due to the Haldex.

If it was me I would try and lay my hands on a ED30 and get it mapped to circa 300bhp.

The Mk5 gti's either have an AXX or BWA engine code, basically the same engine, only difference is one has cast pistons the other forged. The BWA has cast ones, an exercide to reduce manufacturing cost. I've heard of many chipped AXX cars delivering 240bhp plus for over 60k miles, so hardly weak. the weak comment could be from the fact the ed30 and pirelli had 230PS engines ( different codes)

the 30k comment probably refers to either
- cam belts /waterpumps, should be changed every 4 years
- boost pressure dump valve, VW have tried 4-5 versions to fix a tear in the valve, cheap to fix
- some air con compressor failures ( common to most seat, vw, audi, skoda cars)
- and occasional failure of the bucket driving the fuel pump from the cam

Thats it fuel pump on early models .but after 2006 vw changed them for a stronger one.
