Between an AMG SL55 (2003/30,000 mls) or a 996TT (2001/50,000 mls)

Lets have a debate....!

996TT. It depends what you're using it for, but the Turbo is still a good motorway cruiser, and I'm sure it'd leave a 55 for dead down a challenging backroad.

I do like the SL55 though - they sound good and they have huge amounts of grunt. I also think they look great roof up or down.

Great predicament Greg.

I love them both but how would the 996 match up to your 993? It's going to take quite a raw car to compare to the 993 and I reckon the Sl55 would be the rawer of the two.

Mind you, I may be slightly biased having just been out in a noisy V8. hehe

I'm voting SL too. Great cruiser while still a bit wild. Lovely sound, and topless option at the flick of a switch. Less likely to get traded in for something else in 6 months...

I like them both, but why not an Aston or Maserati?

The Porker will no doubt be better than any on a good road, but the Aston and Mazzer will match the SL driving wise and both look better.

These are all my opinions and I have never driven any of the above!

Not a porsche fan but it's a no brainer if you like a spirited drive, the 996 wins hands down. If you like automatics and a comfortable ride the Merc's a lovely motor, just wait till you're a little older...

What a load of crap!
Yes the 63 is a V8, but the Merc is much less a driver's car than the 996tt. Have you driven either, or both?
I'm NOT a fan of the 996tt, it's far too easy for my tastes, but the SL55 is a fat whale in comparison and is incapable of being driven like the 996tt. If you turn off the toys in the 996tt and you have a modicum of talent you will see what a fantastic car it sis dynamically, the SL55 has toys so as to HIDE the flaws in its chassis.

Sorry, rant over, no offence Diz...

Do you want a cruiser that you can hoof once in a while or a proper sports car that can happily cruise when required?

Mind you, the roofless option on the SL55 is nice, and the noise it makes (even factory stock) is wonderful.

Obviously i'd avoid both and get something like a 996 GT3 for a few more pennies...

Agree about the 996 GT3 but they are still out of my budget range...

Two very different cars, but it would be the Pork for me as they're a half decent cruiser and sans interfering electronics they can absolutely fly! I've driven an SL55 and I'd be a little reticent to blast down a decent B road in one to be honest, but I've not driven a 996TT to directly compare them. I guess if 80%+ is 'enthusiastic' A road cruising then probably the SL is the place to be...

I'll never forget coming up against an SL55 in my Evo FQ320 - we came off a slow roundabout side by side onto an empty duel carriageway and I flew off leaving him behind up to 60'ish... however at about 70 he came past with a roar like a fighter plane and left me for dead! hehe

Not sure of your budget, but would also look at a Maser or even an E60 M5. Possibly even a Jag XKRS 4.2 might be had for mid-£20's?

ETA: In this market, £25k would be an offer on this: http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/JAGU...evil

Nice link John but that car is a very late old shape XK, which means it stands to lose a fair bit more in depreciation than the SL or the 996TT. Nice car though, makes a great noise and goes rather well too...

The 'new' shape XK's are still tipping in at mid-30's for a poverty spec... These last 'S' cars were awesome and had all the sports options fitted - I saw one at Castle Combe a couple of years ago and feck me did it fly for something so loaded with leather and toys! biggrin

Agreed re the depreciation, but at least the 'S' will hang on to the pennies a bit longer. frown

Duh......turbo, mapped to 500 bhp, and tidied up a bit, not the best looking 911, but merc......will look dated in 10 minutes.

IIRC They did a version of the XKR called the Silverstone which had all the R pack options, not sure how many they made.

Personally I might go for something like

Weekday
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/942839.htm

and
Weekend
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/994870.htm

Have both for less than the cost of a 996TT. Then again I have always subscribed to the "take 1 car into the shower, not me" philosophy hehe

Merc and get it delimited, or if you can find an SL600 biturbo get one of them instead!
