I am building up a city bike at the moment. Im thinking of going with a matt black stealth look. I started preparing the frame last night but its got me thinking.
What other parts of the bike can i spray black without going overboard and what bits wont look crap over time.
In my arsenal i have a can of matt black paint, some lacquer , wet n dry and degreaser.
The bike has silver handle bars, stem and seat post and cranks. It also has deore hubs with silver spokes and black mavic rims.
Now, in my quest to get this machine looking as good as possible what parts would you guys ad to the list to be painted.
my thoughts are.
handle bars - yes, not much is likely to be moved or damage them
stem - possible. its a quill(sp) adjustable so i can break it down to its component parts
seat post - no, wont last 5 minutes if i have to adjust the seat and the paint and lacquer my stop it fitting inside the seat tube.
cranks - no i seemed to of rubbed the factory paint of my race face dh cranks on my mtb so i doubt my home job will last any longer
wheels - I have to strip down and repack the hubs anyway so i was thinking about spraying the hubs and spokes and rims. now, this i am uncertain of because i think it could look awful. thoughts?
Has anyone else done anything similar?

Im not too worried about security. I will use it to ride to the bus stop for work and its left at a very busy U-Bahn station. I have some security wheel and seat skewers jsut to stop the opportunist goign for the wheels.
Erm, and as for teh carbon comment they would have to be very very dumb but i see your point

Done using Scotchlite 680 black reflective tape. Stealth for day, bright for night.

Thats a great Idea,
One flaw though, without lights on your bike you still can't be seen when you aren't in the direct line of the headlamps.
So you're less at risk when directly side on (a little late in most side impact accidents), but only marginally less at risk when viewed from front or behind - due to the small cross section of a bike and rider ....
I still go with mega bright lights front and back as my first form of defence, although I might get some of these stickers as my bike is black - so anything is better than nothing.

I have a couple of questions regarding the bike prep. whats the best chemical for preparing the frame? Is there anything i can use to remove the old decal and some selotae residue?
Is Nitromors to extreme?
And, as another poster said. Will laqueur on top of matt paint make it look shiny or still matt?
Thanks
