Hi All,

I noticed last night that theres a slight water leak that appears to be coming from somewhere behind the cambelt cover. I took the undertray off and could see where water has run down the alloy casting behind the bottom pulley.

Is this a sign that the water pump is on its way out ? Car is a 2005 2.0 Tdi S-line thats done 45000mls.

Yep thats the water pump alright.

Advise replace cambelt etc at the same time, its a bit early but will save money on labour in the long run.

Its out of manufacturers warranty, but well Worth asking the dealer if any good will is applicable as mileage quite low on your car.

Thanks for the advice, are there any tensioners that should be changed at the same time ? Is it usual for water pumps to fail at this age / mileage on these ?

You should get a cam belt kit, which will contain the tensioner and a relay roller along with the belt.

If there going to fail, water pumps usually go between 80-100k miles, 40odd is pretty unusual.

There are no guaranty's But do ask about the good will, could save a lot of money if Audi Uk decide to pay for half or it or something.

Should be about £500.

However 3 years or older cambelts currently fixed price of £329. So could mention that when your ring the dealer.

Hi,

Taken the car in to the dealer today. They've said that they cannot offer any "goodwill" as the car doesn't have a full "Audi" service history. They also say that they would change the water pump at 4 years old anyway, when it would be due a cambelt change. Don't know if what they're telling me is right or not.

Some dealers do the water pump regardless when the cam belt is changed. We always advise it but customers have the choice. The belts should be changed regardless of milage at 5 years not 4.

But apart from that sounds like they are spot on. It is up to Audi UK not the dealer weather you get goodwill or not and there is a criteria you have to meet, I guess part of that includes full dealer service history.

Make sure you mentions the special offer £329 inc price, All Uk dealers must follow this on cars up to 2.0l over 3 years old. That price doesnt include the water pump though.

Thanks for the advice on this one, the water pump and cambelt were changed for £395. They said that the price would have been £546 had it not been for the cambelt special offer. According to the invoice most of the saving is due to the labour charge being discounted by 45%.
