Halfords...dohh!

My son runs a 1990 1.1 Ford Fiesta (first car), and has to top-up the oil weekly 'cos it's seen better days.
Last weekend he went to Halfords to buy some oil. I told him to get some basic multigrade oil. He returned with 5l of Halfords 5W/30 part-synthetic costing over £20 "suitable for the latest high-efficiency engines" said the label on the container.
No good, I say. "Take it back and tell them you want a basic multigrade like GTX or similar".
He comes back again with 10W/40 Part-synthetic "suitable for turbo, multivalve modern engines"...cost £17.50. Apparently three assistants consulted the computer and came up with that recommendation.
This time I go back to the store myself and ask the manager why they sold my son this oil when the Haynes manual specifies a simple multigrade. "My son asked for multigrade and has neither a modern, multivalve nor a turbo engine in his car".
"I wouldn't believe what Haynes manuals say" said the manager. "And this is a very good oil"
"That maybe so, but when the engine's 13 years old with >100K on the clock and burning the stuff, it's a waste"
"Oh, if it's that old then you want ordinary multigrade" said the helpful man.
Cost of 5 litres of basic multigrade: £10.
