My son has been looking into affiliate marketing and has stupidly agreed to a distance one-on-one coaching course by telephone. They were apparently on the phone for over an hour and persuaded him to give his card details for the full value of the course fee!!

I've told him to get right back onto them and cancel the course - Will they? Do they have to?

Can he cancel the payment with Visa before it goes through?

I know he's a silly boy but he's inexperienced and these people can be persuasive.

Any comments/help?

Thanks

I am not a lawyer, but the distance selling ACT looks like it may play here.

Usually 14 days to request full refund. Send letter by recorded mail stating cancelation, and make sure the CC compnay have it on their records..

edit: just googled and this link to Office of fair trading covers distance selling, which this telephone call was..

http://www.oft.gov.uk/advice_and_resources/resourc...

An this link specifies the cancellation procedure for a service contract, i.e telephone training..

Cancellation periods
''services – seven working days from the day after that on which the consumer agrees to go ahead with the contract.''

http://www.oft.gov.uk/advice_and_resources/resourc...

(it is 7 days not 14)

If they fail this, then contact Office of Fair Trading, and the CC as this could be classed as fraud(I think)

How long was the course going to be? For more than a grand i'd want at least a hundred hours (not that i'd want it at all).

Thank you for spending the time looking that up. He got back to them and cancelled it over the phone. He reckons they weren't happy but is sure it'll be cancelled. He's going to keep an eye on his account. I'll give some thought as to whether he should do more.

Ring the bank report the card lost it will then be blocked straight away so if they havent taken it yet they cant do in the future as he will get a new card number.

Can I ask what company it was? Seems a bit extreme and I happen to work for one of the big UK training providers.

I would phone the credit card company as well, to check the payment has been reversed! By the time the bill comes in it may be too late!

Tell the credit card company you have lost your card they will then stop the card thus making all further transactions null as the card is not active, worked for me !
