I have the chance of buying a V70 and would like to tap on the knowledge of those in the know!

The car in question is a 2003/53 plate 2.4 170bhp SE with winter pack in graphite grey with silver trim, 7 seats and integrated child booster seats in the back, cruise control, CD changer, heated electric leather memory seats, etc etc. It has just hit 78k miles and has full and comprehensive Volvo service history by the supplying dealer, 1 owner and a new clutch 8000 miles ago after the master cylinder leaker all over it.

Overall its in very good condition however the alloys are a bit scrappy and there is a graze on a passenger door and rear wing where the driver clipped a gate post - only superficial paintwork damage.

I know and trust the owner, he is just about to p/x it for a brand new Volvo XC90 and the dealer has offered him just over 3k p/x against a new one. Given he paid 26k for it 5 ½ years ago he would rather sell it to me than let the dealer make a chunk of money on polishing it up and putting it back on the forecourt for a couple of k more than the p/x value.

It will need a service in 6k miles and has not had a CAM belt changed yet (according to service schedule its due at 96k – which seems high to me), it will also need some new front bushes (although he is not sure what ones) and will need new front discs/pads (which does not worry me as I am capable of a brake service).

My questions are;

Is 3k good value for the car? - Parkers is a little out of date and prices on the Autotrader vary wildly

What are the weak points I should be looking out for (if any)?

Are there any recalls that should have been taken care of?

How horrific are the servicing costs and how much will a CAM belt change set me back?

Thanks in advance for your help, advice, opinion etc……… :-)
