F1 experts - help please

Hi Guys

I have a uni exam on international leisure marketing coming up next week and we have been told the 1st question will be on a sector study, I have chosen formula 1.

I need to be able to outline the structure, key players, trends, issues, implications for british organisations and policy recommendations (can national or local government help to succeed in global market).

Also how things like the credit crunch, financial situation changes, cultural obstacles and how it competes with other sports for spectators and sponsorship etc

Thought this would be a good test of PH knowledge and will be very grateful for any links to good websites or any upto date info people can provide.

Credit crunch will be an interesting challenge. Has it effected F1? I wonder what gate receipts are like for this year compared to last. I know the FIA are attempting to cut costs due to the economic downturn but the maufacturers are resisting. Its one sport that commands Multi Millions irrelevant of economic downturns. Everyone else will be writing how the economic downturn has severely affected their chosen sport and you will be writing how Ferrari have thretend to withdraw if they can#t spend hundreds of millions every year!.

Hi yep I have noted the credit crunch as a major issue to discuss aswell as ferrari. I noticed somewhere on PH that someone mentioned with regards to one of the races just gone that there were not many spectators and this being becuase of the culture of the country working at weekends and that if the race was held in the week it would be packed but I cant remember which country this was relevant to.

I have a list of the ROI for governements from f1 in 2007 but would love a list for 2008.

Also is there anyway of getting a map or list of the key players/companies in f1 and also a list of sponsors from 2008 and 2009?

any help will be amazing

Attendance - Spanish GP down 42% on last year. Probably credit crunch related. Unlikely to be related to Alonso's car as it was poor last year too!

Sponsors - ING to end Renault sponsorship at the end of the season. Williams are due to lose a couple of sponsors at the end of the year. RBS are cutting back their sponsorship at the end of the year. Currently they sponsor Williams and some trackside ads, but I'm not sure which they're cutting!

Credit crunch - was Honda's stated reason for leaving F1.

Remember that the FIA have already cut costs for this year, due to current economic climate. New regs were partly to make the cars a bit cheaper: No in-session testing, limited wind tunnel testing. Limit on what you can charge for an engine, etc... Am sure I read that Brawn only decided to buy Honda due to the effects of these changes.

When I sat my finals we had a question on strategic marketing I wrote about Lotus moving up market from the Elan to the Elite, (Ops I'm old), got a great result as it was not one of the text book examples, The examiners was Prof Joe Smith at Birmingham Uni, and he wanted people who could apply knowledge.
Be careful it’s not all just about regurgitating facts, but extrapolating these fact to conclusions, what do you think the effect will be, (of say the credit crunch), When you finish Uni there is more money in telling some-one the likely outcome of the event (say the credit crunch on their business) as opposed to writing a report on what has happened to date. Don’t know your subject but a good exam/examiner should be looking at how you analysis and interpret the info, how you do the research, are your conclusions logical. And not just a repeat of facts picked up on PH (or anywhere else).

Any way that’s my advice

For sponsor details, just trawl through the various Team websites. Industry news is available on www.autosport.com
The recession is certainly affecting all the teams, in terms of both sponsorship and corporate attitudes. Honda cited the recession as a reason for pulling the plug (not at all because they were doing a really crap job of course), which then sparked off a panic wave of cost cutting measures by all the other teams. But the FIA proposed budget cap looks like being a step too far for the bigger teams. But I would expect further cost cutting next year once a compromise is agreed.
