My S4 scrapes the driveway and the speedbumps in my estate - its a nightmare getting it out and onto the open road.
The silencer in the centre of the car is the part that is hitting obstacles and its only by 1-2 inches. I wondered about taking off the silencer and cutting it down by 2 inches and then welding it back up? Anyone done anything similar?

The silencer on my S3 is level with the down pipes underneath so wouldn't have thougth it possible to cut it down. I usually have to go over bumps very - very gently and with the twin chocolate squares type, normally go through the middle one wheel on each. Really annoys the other traffic wink

1-2 inches in HEIGHT?? yikes

I set up my S3 with 4.5in clearance throughout the length of the exhaust system and it cleared all that the Highway Department could put in my way round here. If you've got only ~3in ground clearance, something is seriously wrong somewhere, I think.

You must be running quite high on the set up. Had my suspension sorted out a while back and I'm looking at 3 1/2" clearance. Still a problem with speed bumps but no grounding issues whilst driving.

Hi,
No I dont mean 1-2" from the ground - I mean I only need an extra 1-2" (no jokes please!)

What are your Chassis corner heights/ground clearance ?

measure on flat surface from outrigger corners to floor, front and back.

are you running low already ?

Outrigger corners idea on another thread i queried Derek about his recommended ride height, thought he meant the external corners of the tubes lower point not the joining plate. Makes sense now smile

I have taken a closer look and the silencer is only about 15mm lower than the pipes!
The car doesnt seem particularly low, although I will need to measure it.
I did notice that the square silencer is held on by a strap with bolts at each end. Between the chassis and the strap are two doughnut type washers which are quite thick. I could tighten the bolts (squeezing the doughnuts) to get a little more clearance. I dont need that much as the car only just scrapes the driveway.

Watch you dont squeeze your doughnuts (ooh-err) so much that you pull the pipes into close proximity with the chassis rear of the silencer, wrap the chassis with some heat insulation if it is close but dont get it so close that they actually contact...

K wink
