Hi,

i had both a 400se for 6 years and then both that and my cerb 4.2 for 2 years and evntually sold the 400.

I still miss the open top and that 400se sound - its much better than the cerb rumble but once I met a Lambo on the motorway in the cerb and just destroyed it the 400's fate was sealed - i just stopped using it.

I would not worry about 4.2 or 4.5 there is not much in the performance - buy a known car that has had lots spent on it - you just will not regret it except for the sound - the performance difference is unbelivable.

Oh and you can do a long 200 mile plus journey in a cerb and still feel ok at the other end -- my 400 was like being in a washing machine on a long run.

oh did i mention - i still miss the 400se sound - but i will not swap back

What i would say having owned both a 4.2 & a 4.5 is this~whichever one you decide on make sure you buy the best car you can afford.FULL SERVICE HISTORY,check chassis, has it had clutch work?tappets done recently?check for leaks in steering rack, radiator, clutch slave/master cylinder, shockers, check wishbones for rot, anything your not happy about get it checked out or walk away.4.2 very quick 0-80,4.5 bags of torque 100+.If you wanna keep it in A1 condition its gonna cost you money,if you think your gonna run it on a shoestring the car will soon turn to a bag of scensoredt! But if you want one that bad~GET ONE~you wont regret it thats for sure!!!thumbup

I`m sure it issmile-the point i was trying to make is IMO the difference between the 4.2 & the 4.5 is the 4.5 has a lot more torque when you get it above legal speeds on public roads. My 4.2 was a early `N` regd 1996 car and it was mental up to 80mph,certainly quicker up to 80 than the 4.5 i have now!

thanks for the reply guys, does anybody want to buy a 400se!
would you recommend buying from a dealer with a warranty(are these warranty's worth the money) or buy private and save the extra money for repair/maint fund

thanks

You could do a lot worse than buying a sorted known PH Cerb and save a few quid over a dealer IMHO

Anthony, if you go on Sunday come and have a chat. I had a 4.2, now a 4,5 and a 350i. They are all different but fantastic too.

Wouldn`t bother with a warranty if your buying a V8 Cerb, save the money in a service/maintainence fund IMO
