putting 2 and 2 together?
Discussion
ferrari are fighting with the F1 owners and threating to quit at the end of the season if they dont get the rules changed,The ferrari F1 team boss and the president of ferrari are coming to le mans this year invited by the ACO,the ferrari president is even going to be the guest race starter,is it just me putting 2 and 2 together?
OR MIGHT WE SEE AUDI PEUGEOT ASTON AND FERRARI BATTLING IT OUT NEXT YEAR
OR MIGHT WE SEE AUDI PEUGEOT ASTON AND FERRARI BATTLING IT OUT NEXT YEAR

ummmm.. it would be nice to see an all out Ferrari return to win Le Mans.....
But, I don't think it is really going to happen.
We've heard and seen it before in the F1 circle. Big threats of quiting, all in the name of increased negotiations. Ferrari know F1 would not want them to quit, as much as they pretent it wouldn't matter if they did.
end result, the rules get adapted to suit the big names ie.ferrari.
I actually think ferrari is right. the championship would be nonsense with half the grid on a different spec to the other half.
I just can't see ferrari actually leaving F1.

Can't realistically see Ferrari leaving F1, the FIA will come up with a set of rules they'll accept. However, there's still going to be pressure to decrease budgets in F1 and Maranello may well look to spend the surplus at Le Mans. Can't see them entering a diesel but just as the FIA will flex the rules to keep Ferrari in F1, I'm sure the ACO would be prepared to change them to get Ferrari in LMP1. Aston Martin vs Ferrari has got to be a bigger draw than Audi vs Peugeot.

I disagree. For the City banker maybe but the sales rep and mondeo man will get excited by such a duel

Part of the success of Ferrari, and more recently Aston Martin, is that it is now a brand, but for most people it's an aspirational brand as they'll never be able to afford a Ferrari.
But Audis and Peugeots are much more within reach, but they each have a strong legacy of successful competition in various categories over the years.
They capture peoples' emotions, in the way that Audi and Peugeot don't seem to. I see more support for Pescarolo than for Peugeot in terms of flag waving fans.
So, Ferrari vs Aston would be a bigger draw for the crowds than two 'normal' brands arguing over who has the fastest diesel. Just look at the support the GT1 Aston team had when it was up against Ferrari and Corvette.

I think there's also a slightly more tangible link to the road cars with companies producing exotica. Granted, even a One 77 is still a far cry from a Lola Aston, but it's a lot more plausible than a 407 to 908.
Back to the original topic, I'm not sure Ferrari would need to pull out of F1 to field a Le Mans contender. It would also provide a very good arena to show off its KERS technology, as tipped to appear on the F450.

The engine in the Lola Aston is based on a production unit like the GT1 cars. Pugs , Audis are pure racing motors. What we need is a Ferrari P1 with a 599 based motor, or a 430 based one as I think the rules are changing to no more than 8cyl in the not to distant future.

LMP1
Weight – 900kg
Power – 520 bhp
Engine (Diesel) – 3.7 litre 8 cylinders with twin turbos
Engine (Petrol) – 3.4 litre 8 cylinders normally aspirated / 2 litre 6 cylinders single turbo
Fuel Tank – 75 litres
Wheel Dimensions – Width (max) 16 inches, Diameter (max) 28.5 inches
LMP2
Weight – 900kg
Power – 420 bhp
Engine (Diesel) – Series production 4 litre 8 cylinders (original supercharging system)
Engine (Petrol) – Series production 4 litre based on 2010 GT2 / Strictly series production 4.5 litre (according to the results obtained in 2009)
Fuel Tank – 68 litres
Wheel Dimensions – Width (max) 14 inches, Diameter (max) 28 inches

So any new entrant in P1 would realistically have to have a bespoke race engine rather than production based. 2011 P1 will effectively have 2009 spec/standard/regulation P2 engines.

Yep. Not so long ago I had a very interesting chat with Bruno Famin of Peugeot Sport about the disadvantages of not having a production-based unit in an enclosed LMP.
From assorted news articles ....
The company would prefer to focus on other racing categories than give in to the FIA's plans, stated Piero Ferrari, who is adamant that the Maranello-based outfit is 'not bluffing'.
"I strongly believe that if you look at the past of Ferrari, today's image is born from victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and sports and GT racing," the 63-year-old told the Guardian.
"We cannot forget our beginnings, and the passion of my father is still in the company. But we want racing with clear rules and starting from the same point."
