The A66 is a standing joke in the local community. It has needed
upgrading for the last 30 years.
Suggest M25, M1, M6, M6 Toll, M6. At least these roads are
wide enough and the M6 Toll is mostly boycotted by lorries,
which means acceptable progress is almost possible.
I'd be interested to find out which website you used.
When I travel home to North Yorkshire I always use the A1 over the M1, but as with any motorway a lot depends on what day and time you are travelling - it is certainly much better since they started making the improvements in removing all the roundabouts. I actually used the M1 a couple of months ago and there was about 15miles of 50mph average speed near Chesterfield way - that was tedious, but I'm not sure if it is still there.
The A66 can be a nightmare too as many lorries use it and there are a lot of sections which are single carriage. If you don't cut across country further south then a northern scenic alternative could be the A684, come off the A1 at Leeming Bar and turn left and follow the road to Leyburn, Hawes and towards Kendal and pick up the M6 just before.

The A1 is better now than it used to be as all the old roundabouts have been bypassed. Used the A66 for the first time last week (also on our way to Scotland), and found it not too bad as even on the single carriageway bits, there were sections where overtaking was possible if stuck behind a lorry.
On the way back, we used the A684 to cut across country from the M6 to the A1, as we had arranged to stay overnight near Hawes. The road was fine from Hawes to the A1, but the other side to the M6 was a bit nadgery and the road surface wasn't brilliant in places. Very scenic though.
