I need to weld the top suspension mounting on my 400SE. I am having trouble getting my mig welder into the available space under the wheel arch. So I was thinking of cutting an access hole through the inner wheel arch in the engine compartment so that I could weld it from above. Does anyone know whether the inner wheel arch is double skinned or a single thickness which would make it much easier to cover with an access panel afterwards?

Would it be possible for you to post a couple pictures of your
damage? My car too is troubled by front suspension cracks and if
where your welding is another potential trouble spot for me I'd like
to see it.

I thought you could cut a hole in the boot to access the rear suspension tops, as a lot of people do this to make removal easier.

It's single skinned and not that thick, 3-4mm perhaps. Try drilling a test hole first. My front tyres on the 400 have worn a groove through it on full lock.

Maybe better to lift the body, also this what you will be keeping the heat away from the GRP and Paint, last thing you want is the car going up in flames.

Also if Chassis has got that bad, maybe worth a full body off and full restore.
