Hi All
I don't really want a discussion on which one is best (the reason I mention the 996 is to highlight where I am) as I know they are different beasts or on running costs, as I'm going into this with open eyes and have read other useful posts on this, but have a few questions and wish to gauge your opinion on:

1) How does the engine and other components fare on higher mileage examples eg, 50k+? (I know the clutch can be a problem). I plan to use it as an every day car and will only do around 8k miles p.a.

2) Are there any body work problems as it will be kept outside?

3) Some trade classifieds offer an independant warrenty. Are they worth it and which would you recommend?

4) Depreciation - Sorry, I know this has been flogged to death on many other forums (especially the Pork!) but at £20k for an 04 model, the depreciation curve must be levelling out and does its limited production help its exclusivity and residual values?

5) Indies - can anyone recommend one around Birmingham?

I'm going to drive a few at the weekend. Any thoughts on these, and do you know of any other tidy ones for sale?

Mark,

The 4200 is a great everyday car. 8k miles per year should be a doddle and, in my experience, the more you use the car the better it will behave. Mine has averaged 9k per year and has been faultless. It's only when they are left unused and/or driven infrequently that problems seem to arise more often.

The clutch should last very well if you avoid the traffic-light drag races - I tend to get the car rolling on little or no throttle and only boot it once already in motion. They're not the most fun in stop-start traffic but if your daily journey has some open, sweeping roads then you'll be rewarded with a superb drive each day.

I'd say they're on the home straight with regard to depreciation. A tidy, well used example is unlikely to fall much below £15k and would also make a better propostion for daily driving than a garage queen, but then I'm no dealer so take that as you see fit!

I've got through a fair few sets of tyres, fitted upgraded brake pads and a Larini sports exhaust. I've driven it across Swiss alpine passes, toured the length of Italy, drove the Targa Florio in Sicily; it's been driven around the TT course on the Isle of Man, not to mention numerous other hoons & holidays. Also saw 170mph through the timing beams at Vmax. Awesome cars for the money.

Good luck with your search. I know of one that may be for sale in a month or two. Feel free to PM me if you need more info.

Jules
