Keep putting it off don't know why.
I have the cash so why not forget the credit crunch and do it.

It will not be a daily driver, more for fun in the sun and at weekends.
Plus maybe the occasional track day.

Would appreciate your thoughts on this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1038027.htm
as a first westy.

Thanks

Whilst I'm not a massive fan of the sucker son it, it looks like a clean tidy car. The seller seems honest about what to expect from a 15 year old kit, ie a few chips and crazing perhaps on the body, and the price seems reasonable. Best bet, as always with things like this, is to go and have a look. It might be just what you're after. If not, it's one crossed off the list.

I would be looking at a newer BEC from MK or one of the other makers for that kind of cash.

At that price? MK's might be cheaper than the equivalent westy, but not that much less!

maybe an MK is a little more expensive but there are alot of newer kit cars out there for that money.

I would look for the right spec, newer car without the westfield price tag.

I bought mine a couple of months back in exactly the same position as you - I figure the moneys not doing anything in the bank and buying a good Westfield at the right price you can't really go far wrong if/when you need to release the funds again.

I paid 8k for a 2002 in very good condition with a fairly heavily tuned 2l zetec, so to my mind that looks a little steep for the age and spec.

As others have said there are other kits out there too for similar money from the likes of MK, Tiger, etc. Have a poke around a few, and keep an eye on the classifieds to get an idea of the desirable models/specs - I found the good well priced ones were selling within days so you need to be very pro-active!

If you could negociate the price down towards 5 a bit more and in the flesh its not all scabby metalwork ect. then it looks a nice car. I'd change a few bits visually, but then everyone plays with kits, thats part of the fun.

Agree with other guys ..pretty good motor for the money with pretty much everything you could want at that price ...not a particularly desirable look to the car, but that is very personal

However for not much more zetec's start coming in, with more power, lighter engines and easier to tune if you wish

Pinto is a bit of an anchor and is gonna cost a fortune to get much more power out of it should you get bored with 160bhp ...

If 5k ish is as much as you wanna spend then go have a look at it, it's about on the money with a haggle

160HP is enough, especially at beginning...price a bit too much...around 5000 would be better. the pinto is heavy, but reliable and gives you plenty of torque.

also to consider: its an independant rear suspension model!!!!

everything looks tidy. so i guess it might be a good deal.

Meant to say stickers on it, but my typing is still of the two fingers and a thumb variety.

Graham, i'm interested!
I have a 2l zetec in mine and had been thinking about tuning it, if you don't mind me asking..... what has been done to it? what power have you acheived? how reliable has it been? have you encountered problems with emmissions(presuming it needs testing for MOT)?
thanks
Matt

Is that considered to be a good thing in Westie circles?

Ahh, yes it obvious now you say it but I looked at that for quite a while trying to work out what it meant. I even googled for it and it has an entry in the Urban dictionary!

The previous owner took it to these guys http://www.raceline.co.uk/ and had the R200 upgrade done. That was roughly 2 years / 2.5k ago.

I've only had the car since March so wouldn't like to comment too much, but it seems to drive very well and I know it passes MOT emissions no problem.

To the OP. Go for it, they are relatively cheap to buy, insure and run and great fun at legal(ish) speeds. I am now looking to get back into the fold after selling mine about 4 years ago to do the TVR thing. Had a V8S and a Griff 500 and didn't enjoy them half as much as my humble 1600 CVH Westfield.
And they will hold their values well if you buy wisely, probably as good an investment as leaving the money in the bank at the moment and much more fun. Good luck with your search.
I am waiting on an engineers report on an 1800 Speed Sport which if ok means I will be back in one in a couple of weeks and I can't wait. B****r the recession, enjoy while you can.thumbup
