Mate sent his brother in a rental transit to France.

How's your brother's calendar looking?

I always used to pop over to France for booze for any large parties. Not sure how good a deal it is these days what with the collapsed exchange rate.

Take a look at other French sparkling wines too, though. They are as good as, and in some cases better than many champagnes, but are much less costly due to not carrying the 'Champagne' moniker. Just ensure that they are labelled 'Brut'; there are several nice ones from Alsace.

Ferry down to Spain and buy a ton of Cava instead of France. Should save you Substantially more.

Probably not worth it at the moment. Vueve, Moet and Mumm are between EUR 25-30 a bottle over there, which at Winky's screwed fx rate isn't much of a saving from buying it in the UK smile

If you are paying corkage, then you want to buy either Jeroboam or Rehoboam size bottle, I'd buy direct from the Champagne house.

Given current exchange rate, Majestic is the best option - bear in mind they also do "sale or return" smile

If you're going to drink that rubbish (IMO, naturally wink ) you'd probably get the best deal at Asda!

Though your idea did prompt me to recall that Aldi have a reasonable Prosecco for next to nothing.

Depending on your budget, might be worth considering GreenPoint sparkling as an alternative. Made by Moet (IIRC) through the same process, but just in a different part of the globe.

Most people can't tell the difference anyway...

I'm in a slightly delicate position witht he venue so dont want to try to come across as trying to be clever BUT..do you reckon they'd rate corkage on a magnum as 1 bottle or 2 ?

Corkage is per bottle, the charge is levied for serving the bottle, regardless of size. I'm surprised they won't buy in your Champagne of choice, usually still works out less than corkage.

wavey Zen

Must admit I'm not exactly up on prices for a JB or RB, but when I have seen them for sale they've seemed exponentially expensive in comparison with the discounts available when buyinf cases of the usual sized bottles.

Good point about the venue buying in your choice - assume you've asked Craig?

At my (failed) wedding my father went to France and bought from a reseller. It was an independent label, and cost about £7 a bottle. It is still to this day, one of the best Champaign's I have drunk and I know my fizz. As a guide, Verve spend about %80 on marketing %20 on the wine. Good independents will have a ratio much closer to the reverse of that.

Speak to the Sampler in Islington they should help you locate a good bubbly, designer or independent. They occasionally have one call "Ferrari", which is actually bloody good, costs £25 a bottle and was voted top at one of the wine tastings they do. Bottle looks tacky though.

wavey Depends if the venue are charging £20+ per bottle for corkage, a Salmanazar 9l or 12 bottles works out around £40 a bottle.

confused I'd expect to pay around £25 - £30 for a bottle of non vintage Veuve around £45 for the same at a restaurant.

There speaks a man who has no experience of Cava and probably buys drinks by the name on the label wink
