Chichester, whats it like?
Discussion
I'm going there on monday in my search for work but I've not really been to that part of the world before but willing to give most places a go (I lived in Basingstoke for 5 months so now think I can take anything).
So is it ballachingly boring, full of students/oldies/young mums, a hub of interesting activities?
Any ideas would be great, if this fails I'll be even closer to just dropping everything, picking up some flight tickets and just hoping that when I get there I'll find a job in Australia.

I work in Chichester (or Chi to the locals) and its not the most thrilling of places, lots of retired folk milling about on the outskirts. The town centre is full of students. Pub life is better than the club scene.
However it is in a good location and is a good base, ie Brighton 30 or so miles East, Portsmouth 20 or so miles west and Southampton and Bournemouth not much further in that direction.
Could be worst, just not sure how..

IMO, boring, but depends what you like in a town. Quite pretty, very same-y though, very English, everyone dresses the same on a night out. Not many good restaurants, but a couple of the tucked away pubs are ok. OH is from there so I know it reasonably well. Has a cinema & a well regarded theatre, there is a dodgy nightclub a couple of miles out of the town, although I've heard it's best avoided. If you like nightlife, it's possibly not the place to live.
Sure there will be plenty of people who live thereabouts who disagree with me
Obviously the upside is it's close to Goodwood!

As above, The place is the size of a town but has a cathedral so it is technically a city, and likes to charge city sized tax which discourages pondlife. Locals are all either elderly or students for the uni and as such the place is relatively chav free compared to other areas. The area does lack in facilities for people working there but you can find places to eat if you get out of the city centre.
The Chichester bypass is a total sod. It is a 70mph road but for some reason it is full of roundabouts with no flyovers and you get massive traffic jams on them. Make sure you take that into account when commuting. Aside from that it is a great area.

Doesn't sound too dissimilar to here (Chelmsford) then other than the advantage of Goodwood. Might get there a bit early and go for a wander first then.
I need a bit of nightlife about but not overly bothered about having too much. Like the idea of a beach nearby, southend just isn't my kind of place.

Goodwood.
I really should have mentioned that.
.(Tangmere may be a dump but the Tangmere Air Museum is very good).
They flew Lysanders out of there.

I think it's a similar vintage to the A3 Kingston bypass (i.e. pre-war) the difference being that no-one has spent any serious money on upgrading it. Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
