Hello all,

I need to put a question to the p/h family.

I have been lurking on the site for quite some time now and have recently started posting and all that. I have noticed this phemonemon whereby people automatically class people by dress sense, lack of money or other reasons as 'chavs'.

Now, im only 21 and will be 22 in two weeks. I have never been un-employed or claimed state benifits. Everything i own i have worked for and to be honest i feel like Mr Winky and his minions are shafting me at every opportunity. Reason being im more broke now compared to being 16. And no i dont flounder my money.

However, would you call me a chav for wearing hoodies, trainers and jeans? maybe a slighly out of the ordinary hairstyle?

Do you get my point?

(sorry for the ste post)

No, but the use of a random fish instead of the word Squander will probably be remarked on.

It's not just dress sense (mine is st) or lack of money (I'm not exactly rich). It's their attitude and how they behave.

Of course. As long as they don't hurl abuse at you or treat you any differently, does it matter if you're behaving? I'm a mess of stereotypes. I wear hoodies, ripped trousers and skate shoes, I am oriental looking, I drive a hairdresser's car and I have a well-spoken Southern English accent. That must screw people up a bit. biggrin

haha Is flounder a word?

As for chav's to me (In Liverpool) a chav is someone who wears heavy gold Jewellery and burberry, caps pointed upwards, socks over tracksuit pants etc.

Absolutely not.

You can spot a chav a mile off, it's the whole package - the slouched walk, the spitting, the swearing, the pseudo-black vocabulary (sick, innit blud?) accompanied by exaggerated hand gestures.

Put a 'normal' person in a hoodie and trainers and they'll more than likely just look casual. A chav in a suit is still a chav.

As the saying goes, you can't polish a turd.

unless you wear beige chinos, a blue shirt, brown deck shoes, and have a sweater draped around your shoulders you're a chav, yah?

No, definately not. I say that because I don't want to be the next chav you decide to put on the floor in a supermarket. hehe

It is indeed a word. As a noun it denotes a species of flatfish. As a verb it refers to making an ineffectual attempt to swim.
