Hi all,

I'm supposed to be picking up my AUC tomorrow. Its L/P finance plus a 6K from me. I paid the deposit (1K) using a credit card. The dealer has phoned me and left a message asking how I'm paying the other 5K, and say that debit card is the preferred format. I'm intending to pay by CC rather than DC, which is what I did on my last two AUC purchases.

I think the dealer is just trying to avoid CC company charges and I am well within my rights to pay by CC.

Am I right?

Thx,

C

Then they're probably well within their rights to charge you the 2% or so they'll pay in charges which is going to come to £100

I wouldn't blame them TBH.

I recently paid for my car with a debit card but it would have been nice to get Tesco points for £8k with my CC.

yes, but they are also within their rights to apply a small fee (usually 1-2%) for credit card usage. Or, at least this is common practice in my experience.

Surely they should have said this at the time of sale when I left my deposit by CC?

The merchant charges are not really my concern. If I had a service at the garage done for 500 quid there would be no issue, so this isn't about the policy of paying by CC its all about how palateable it is for the dealer to accept payment by CC for goods/services.

In any case I don't have the cash in my bank yet so I couldn't pay by DC even if I wanted to.

Sure - another alternative is to let them know that if they cannot accept credit card without surcharge then the sale will have to wait until the cash arrives....that might be an incentive to help you out..smile

A bit O/T but some advice. Go through all the paperwork properly when you pick it up - I'm glad I did when I got mine as the financial details had 'changed' somehow (not in my favour) and had to be rectified.
Also remind them that they have to register the sale with BMW correctly or your warranty paperwork will not turn up. It took five phone calls to get that cock-up sorted.

Why not just ring them back and let them know you're paying it by CC instead of debating whether they will / wont cant / should take a CC payment?

I paid the deposit for a new car for the wife by DC and then wanted to pay the rest (c25k) by CC to collect the airmiles, I even offered to pay the handling fee but the dealers wouldnt accept a CC for any amount over 5k.

Said it was company policy and wouldnt budge on it even when I hinted I would walk.......

The dealer has agreed to allow me to pay by CC with no charge to me. Good on them smile
