Just wondering if anyone has used tyres with lower load ratings than OEM. I had to replace a front tyre and was offered a 94Y rated tyre but I insisted on the recommended 98Y. Tyre fitter showed me the load ratings and 98 is 750 kilos and 94 is 670 kilos with the rear tyres rated as 96 capable of carrying 710 kilos.

I guess insurance companies would take a dim view of using lower load ratings than recommended by the manufacturer but wondered has anyone had tyre fitters trying to tell them "it's ok"?

And doesn't the rating only mean that it can carry that much load at the top speed of the tyre ?

i.e.670 kilos at 186 mph or whatever - or have I got that wrong ?.

My PZeros are 93 rated on the 'Ro.

Load ratings are only valid below 130mph.

I seem to remember reading that the loads were at the max speed rating of the tyre.

But not for tyres rated above 130mph.

So are 91 tyres OK for the RO ? I've got them all round although they are getting a bit thin, I've got a couple of new Goodyear F1's but they are 91 rated also that I want to use.

Is it a good idea to have different rates front/rear also ?

91 = standard
95 = high load/911 rated tyres on ro = increased road noise too
