Maybe worth approaching SMTS to see if they would do a bulk run, not sure what sort of minimum they would want.

I bought a kit from SMTS last year - one of the last ones they had I think. The chap I spoke to on the telephone said that the moulds were getting a bit 'rough'.

I don't have the skill to build it, so it is still all complete and 'raw'. I was hoping to find a 'wargamer' - someone used to working with white metal to make it up for me.

I've changed my wheels to Spiders now, so if anyone is looking for a raw complete kit, drop me a line.

Apologies for the thread bump.

Having built a few of these SMTS kits, don't expect Minichamps levels of detail, however, they do build into a nice weighty model. Yes, the moulds are starting to show their age, but this mainly manifests itself in pitting on the surface which is easily sorted with minimum of fuss.

Close up they show their relative simplicity and the factory paint is quite heavy resulting in detail loss and 'jelly mould' ish appearance, but carefully built they are a good representation of the original.

I think Grand Prix Legends are the main conduit for the built versions now.

Is SMTS the only Griffith model available?

I would like one for my next door neighbours 7yr old son, who has become my mini-mechanic but the SMTS model is a bit expensive for a 7yr old

For a modern Griff that is the only option, as far as I know. Spark make a couple of Griffith models but they are original early 60's cars.

There was also a 1/43 white metal Griff by Promod, and endorsed by TVR. Very heavy in weight, even more so than the SMTS. The only way to get a Precat, the SMTS is a 500 only. Not that detailed but pretty good.

I beleive they were mostly dealer advertising models, Portfield had a load done in Yellow for customers.

These are now very rare,I was lucky to get one years ago from eBay which I refinished in black to match my car, even has multispoke wheels on my example.

Maybe it's the angle of the picture but they look wrong. The wheels are also wrong.

Have to agree those pictures are not very good, mine also has proper light pods and the wheels are very different on my early example.Looks much better from the front with number plates fitted. I wouldnt pay £35, I was lucky, mine was under a tenner at the time. That was around 8-9 years ago though.

There are another couple of models along with the Promods and SMTS pictured in Roger Shackletons Griffith book, I've never seen them anywhere though and are very poor, by 'ASB Originals' and 'Connaughtons Models'. Both supposed to be 500's. The latter one looks more like a Tam.

The model they sell has no fairings on the headlights and they can't suggest anything which you could use to mod their model to put them on. They said the plans provided by TVR didn't have faired headlights and suggested the showcars or pre production cars never had faired headlights.

I've never come an original Griff with unfaired headlights - is it true?

The promod models just look wrong for a number of reasons, which suggests why they're 'cheap'. I'd suggest if you really wanted one you'd probably try to use something like an R-type or Ferrari GTO detail kit or similar.

Griffs always had faired headlights even as prototypes. I imagine they didn't 'see' the covers when they made the model or just didn't bother.

Strange that Barreti, all the older Promods I've ever seen always had fairings fitted, they are made of resin, so are slightly yellow in colour, as is the screen.

Maybe one day someone will come up with a decent 1/18 scale model.
