I thought the smoking ban was universal

I was working in Watford yesterday and I was put up in a Hilton hotel and they offered a smoking or non smoking room?

Although I have failed at not smoking it was a surprise to be allowed to smoke inside a hotel room.

Do all / most big hotel chains offer this? And why are they exempt?

Hotel rooms are exempt from the legislation as long as the smoking rooms are clearly marked to differentiate them from non-smoking rooms.

They are classed a private accomodation you have hired for a set period.
Not a public place.

Well yes, I know that's the honest answer, but presumably they must have come up with some sort of answer for public consumption? Does anyone know what it was?

The ban does not extend to Royal Palaces.
Officially it's the Palace of Westminster.

Indeed technically no laws applies to Principle Crown properties.

However the people in charge decided it would be a good gesture not to smoke in the bars. They have to go out onto the terraces.

Smoking isn't banned on a oil rig either, just restricted to certain areas, smokers TV lounge for example.

That's fair enough though. You can't exactly step outside for a quick smoke on an oil rig, can you!

Interesting thought though. What laws do apply on an oil rig in international waters?
