Just bought a pretty mint 143k 2000 530i.

Doing 15k pa in it plan to keep 3yrs.

Is it worth getting an LPG conversion.

I get 28mpg on petrol so approx 8000 quid in fuel over this period.

Assuming I get 24mpg on LPG and costs half the price Im guessing around 5k. That means id be less than 1k up.

Is it worth it? Does it create more reliability issues? Can I get a good system mated to a BMW 6cyl for around 2k? Am I mad getting it on a car with 143k?

And does it actually means it will be worth any more come the future.

Thoughts please smile

Make sure you seriously check out the cars history, servicing and parts already replaced.

I would call BMW and ask them to verify the last date they saw it and the mileage it had, these are very easy to clock.

Things to look out for are bushes, shocks, wishbones, springs and the general suspension parts really.

I wouldn't even consider LPG on a car that old, and think many of the fitters would tell you to avoid it.

How much is the car?? Can't be more than £4k?? Why would you spend £2k now to save maybe £1k over 3 years. Then when you sell it with 200k miles on it do you think it is going to be worth any more than a grand with or without an LPG conversion?? with it may get £1250 but certainly no more.

That would be my issue. The car itself must be cheap at that milage, so whats the point? Better off spending the money on maintenance parts that will need doing at that kind of milage.

yeah think your right. car

cost 2900 but is mint. had loads of work done FBMWSH already had it serviced at BMW and got a clean bill of health.

I might just run it to 200k, pay the maintenence and accept that fuel will cost more but I will be having virtually depreciation proof motoring smile

I've just bought a ridiculously immaculate 540i MY2001 on an "X" and have to say I wouldn't dream of LPGing it.

I think if you're looking to do monster mileage and have a newish car... say a 4.8 X5 or similar then it is worth your while.

Cars at this age may respond well but the next purchaser is going to be VERY wary of a telephone mileage car with LPG as well.

I know that may sound odd but I avoided LPG converted cars in this bracket purely because it's the kind of mod that could cause unspecified and unusual oddities I'd rather not deal with smile
