Swing Low Sweet Chariot
Discussion
My Dad, a lifelong rugby fan and an accomplished winger and fullback in his youth, sadly passed away a couple of days ago and I'm looking for a suitable recording of the above song to play at his funeral.
I thought that either the style of Paul Robeson or a suitably strong female vocal would be good, but haven't as yet manged to find a suitable recording.
The Ladysmith Black Mamboza version, that was the Rugby World Cup anthem, is a bit too 'foot tapping' for a funeral and some of the recording artists listed on Wiki bring too much improvisation to the song.
I'd be grateful for any suggestions, but please, please, don't turn this into a condolences thread
Thanks

UB40 did one I think for the last world cup.....dunno whether that's up your street?
For a small donation, I suspect that a choir would record you a more beautiful version very easily.
A Welsh Male Voice choir would be perfect, although you might struggle to get them to sing Swing Low!

This might help a bit....

There are 1200+ versions available that you can listen to a shortish clip of. You'll have to work out what genre etc you want.
Anyway, I like this one (you have to click on the speaker icon next to the song title to hear a clip)... http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=4...
Hope that helps.

Sorry for your loss. An off the wall suggestion, but it appeals to me. What about an honour guard of fellow rugger buggers performing Swing Low, complete with Headquarters approved actions?
That would be something at a funeral....A young lad, a member of our rugby club, passed away last year...the church was packed to the rafters with players old and new, all wearing club playing shirts....it was so powerful and emotional.....!
