A man who attempted to walk naked from Land's End to John O'Groats has been sentenced to three months prison for breaching the peace.

But Stephen Gough, who has become known as the Naked Rambler, was expected to be released on Friday after the sentence was backdated to October 6 by Inverness Sheriff Court.

He was arrested in the Scottish Highlands while trying to complete his journey, which he says he is undertaking as a human rights protest.

At a trial at Dingwall Sheriff Court earlier this month, he was found guilty of breaching existing bail orders and walking naked in the presence of the public in circumstances likely to produce a road safety hazard on Cromarty Bridge, Ardullie, in Ross-shire.

The offence took place on October 3.

Sentencing had been deferred so Sheriff Alexander Pollock could obtain background reports on Gough.

His solicitor Craig Wood said if Gough was freed he would continue with his quest to walk naked from Land's End to John O'Groats.
