Just a quickie:
Turn ignition on, no red light on dash so alt not charging batt. Will start charging when i give throttle a blip (2500 rpm or so). Bit of wire from earth to brown contact on alt gives red light.
What do we think, chaps? Alt or wire prob?

Eyup, Ant. I'm ow rate. yourself?

Might take alt off and get it checked. Not a major prob, more of a pain in the arsenal. Just thought i'd throw it over to the masses before I did it.

Failure of regulator pack usually results in dash light being on permanently (well when the key is in and turned to position one or further obviously.......) IIRC

If it charges OK and doesn't flatten the battery after you switch off then you know there's nothing drastically wrong with the alternator. The current through the no-charge warning light is used to bootstrap the field coils. Without this there should be enough residual magnetism in the alternator to energise it but it will need more revs. From the symptoms you have I would suspect that the no-charge warning light has failed or got a wiring fault, and this is causing the problem.
