2003 X5 SAT NAV
Discussion
There are common faults with the nav units in BMW’s which means a diy repair or a complete new unit (£1400 from memory)
It is worthwhile checking that the disk is clean and scratch free. If this is ok try disconnecting the unit for a couple of minutes and try it again (with the ignition turned off). It is located in the near side boot compartment and will need a couple of standard radio pins to remove it.
If this does not work there are people selling the part that commonly fails on E-Bay for less than £200.
Please note that I am not a professional but these are solutions that I have found in the past.

I did this on a 2001 330Ci on Sunday. I thought I had 'bricked' my (mkIII) SatNav*, but what I needed to do was remove the fuses from the Radio/Navigation (check your manual) and let it sit for 15 minutes, then re-attach. I then put the ignition to position 1 and waited... and waited. I could see the satnav drive was doing something as the little LED flashed in a non-repeating way, a bit like a computer would do if accessing a hard-drive. After 30 minutes or so, the screen switched to 'update' and ten minutes later I was done...
Phew!
Phew!
- the CD of software seemed to be 'stuck' in the unit and nothing I could do would remove it.

A MK IV can be had from Ebay for 300 pounds, so please don't go and pay dealer money for a new unit, if this turns out to be the problem!
ked or on it's way out and it's a very common problem -remember this is the DVD unit and therefore the laser is more critical than with cd units (eg Mk3s) where they will keep reading long after they are past their best. (Though a new DIY laser will only set you back circa £60 - so still a very worthwhile saving over a new unit if you don't mind this)Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
