If you have seen LuckyP's snaps on the trackday forum, what looks like filth on the rear of the car is actually the result of a failed experiment with Summit silencers. They blew their innards out in the first couple of sessions and the early rain stuck the glass fibre contents to the rear end. The rear lights looked like they were covered in carpetlaugh

Juuuust got on with 105db @4125 rpm although being a rumbly V8 no problem at all with the vital drive-by limit. Interestingly the drive-by measurement didn't go up through the day despite the Summits blowing their guts out. Stubby 10" Jetex on the end of the Summits.

Back to the drawing board for quiet silencing ...........

Rusti,

Glad to hear that as you know I'm thinking of the R888's
A couple of questions....

Was it heavy rain?

Did you get much tread 'melt' on them e.g. the tread pattern blocks starting to warp?

Were they basically grip grip grip with no slip?

Thanks,

Robin.

The 888s were excellent. Just catching one wheel arch a tad but can be sorted without major surgery.

In great contrast to the TurboNutterPratMobiles I am used to there was zero melting. In fact there is barely any wear - bloody hell!! That said, Goodwood isn't going to trash the tyres and Combe will be more testing.

Can't say I fancy my luck too much in the GTR in monsoon conditions on any tyre but in ordinary English summer rain it was just fine and plenty of feel coming through.

What was interesting was that the word understeer didn't pop up in my head all day - I reckon that tells a story...........

Understeer? - smundersheer!!! Brake and turn. Keep the nose down and initiate the turn with the fronts still loaded. Don't do what I used to do...brake, coast then try to turn in with the car flat. You ain't gonna make it!!

great feedback, the toyos sound the trick then?? The summit silencers dont sound so good, we were planning to run them on our converstions, we may need to rethink, the blower will certainly rearrange their internals. Great to hear your enjoying the car.

Glad you like the R888s Stuart. They really are the muts nuts & they last a long time compared to the very good Khumos.
I may be able to facilitate cheaper prices for a bulk buy if anyone is interested.
Just out of interest, did you go for the 255 size on the fronts?

im interested in a bulk buy but i dont want to have to do too much in the way of body mods to make the 255's fit.

What width R888 are you running up front and are you set up with the rose jointed suspension and or track spring package? If not the track springs might help cure the rub, plus you can go for more camber with the R888's if that might help too.

Kyle there is an exhaust specialist here in macclesfield who manufactures exhausts and silencers in stainless... he is the top dog when it comes to quality but might be pricey.. if you need as price ill pass by for you

They are the 255s and they rub ever so slightly on the n/s. I blame the builder for not putting the body on straight wink

He has the track springs already. But we came to the conclusion after inspecting the contact patch that another half degree should clear the arch and at the same time give full central contact.

Can anyone workout what half a degree more of neg camber would equate to in mm added inboard at the tyre shoulder? I gave my...errr...calculation on the day, but was laughed outta town!!! laugh

I was amazed at how little wear there was on the R888s. Even and regular, not like on my MR2. My Porker was on the same rubber and wear was the same.

Damn...I'm getting involved again....leave it!!

I will be fitting 888's to the GTW very soon (already have the tyres but not the GTW  ) I have plumped for 225/40x18 on the front mainly because I fancy having the tyre stretched onto the widest rim possible therefore reducing the overall height to nearer standard. The tread pattern on the 888 lends itself to be stretched and optimised more than some other designes and I do not think that the contact patch will end up that much less in real terms. The Toyo's are also notorious for not having overly stiff sidewalls and the stretch will also help alleviate this anomaly to some degree I hope. The 335 tyre is recommended to be fitted to a wheel no wider than 12.5" and the 225 no wider than 9" where as the 255 starts at 8.5" and goes up to 10". There should be little or no noticeable loss of grip from the front as this is determined predominantly by the suspension geometry as opposed to mechanical grip; I will let you know of the results in due course.

Kyle, if theres a couple of people who want them, I deal direct with Toyo HQ as I get sponsorship from them.
I can check the prices once theres a posted interest for them.
