Illegal or just taking the p*ss?
Discussion
Many years ago I made extremely good time getting into university by using the gap opened up in traffic by a fire engine - at no point did I exceed the posted speed limits nor jump any lights but I did get a slap over the wrists by a BiB who saw me.
Saw the same thing happen on the M4 the other evening - Police 4x4 with blues and twos on opening up a hole in traffic and a few people taking the opportunity to use the gap after him...

Phil,
Very dangerous thing to do.....nothing more will wind up a BiB.
The ones that cause us the most problems are Motorcycles. They usually get the hint pretty damn quickly and in extreme cases we stop...advise them of the error of their ways and then carry on.
People are only looking out for the one vehicle and tend to pull back in line pretty quickly to close the gap.
Some people treat this as surfing but its not too long before they fall off and damage their boards.

I disagree Tony. Surely a much better wind up would be where a car approaches head on at high speed to a parked trafpol, before proceeding to do doughnuts at highest velocity, while the passenger "moons" out of the passenger window (open naturally) before giving a quick coffee beans style shake of the wrist and then drives off at similarly high speed? lol Or am i completely barking?

Its funny you should mention that...I have been meaning to get a picture/video of me doing something like that infront of a speed camera, maybe while standing on the gas with one foot on the steering wheel and hanging out the sunroof with a can of beer on one hand a a mobile phone in the other

Interesting! So, following an emergency vehicle at a safe distance and at or below the speed limit and without overtaking on the inside or using the hard shoulder of a motorway or doing anything else illegal is a "very dangerous thing to do"!
Do you really mean that you would pull someone for dangerous driving - a natural consequence of your statement - despite the situation I have outlined? You would be laughed out of court!
If the danger lies with people pulling out behind the emergency vehicle without looking - surely they are the ones driving dangerously?
If I were following an emergency vehicle in the manner I describe, I would have no hesitation in using my horn to give 'audible warning of approach' to deter other vehicles from pulling out.
Oh, and deltaf's comment just about sums up my response to "nothing more will wind up a BiB" - but he put it more eloquently (
). I'm sure you can't really mean that either! Streaky
I think if anyone tried to follow me on a blue light run they would definitely have to break speed limits.
The "parting of the sea" effect is a very temporary one and I can't see a car being able to follow for more than a few hundred yards at most before the tide came in.
I personally think this would come under "Driving like a tw@t", but can't recall the act and section

To put this bluntly......if an Emergency vehicle is forcing its way through traffic and another motorist is following in its wake (taking advantage of other motorists who have had the good grace to pull over)then they are nothing short of being a complete and utter t*at in my opinion.
Ive sampled both sides of this and its an utter pisstake, no other way to describe it. !

Tony...
If i closed the door on some Tw*t would i be in the wrong??
I know that i would close the door cos it is taking the P IMHO
I would claim that i never saw him (he came from nowhere), the EV had passed no others following then return to my postion then bang......
Would i be in the right??

He would be commiting the offence of 'Without reasonable Consideration'.
If in the senario described, the other car was effectively chiseling its way through traffic that had allowed an Emergency vehicle through and you hit it then without witnesses it would be difficult to prove and would be a ball ache.
However, if you had a witness to corroborate what you have said then there would be no problem with getting a conviction.
People who drive like this are basically rude, arrogant and have no regard for other road users.

I'm with tony on this one. We can all argue the point that you should be allowed to and make comparisons to similar situations but I think this is something that most road users know not to do.
Simple.
tonyrec said:tonyrec - I have real experience of this when following an ambulance containing a member of my immediate family who was being rapidly transported to the ER through fairly heavy traffic. I kept my hand on the horn and my headlights on all the way! And yes, some ccensored:s tried to pull out in front of me to take advantage of the ambulance 'parting the waves'! So please don't criticise me for spouting "an obvious load of old tat" - it wasn't your son at risk of dying! Thank you! - Streaky

Please dont get dramatic here.......you are way off course.
This thread was talking about everday people who take the absolute p*ss and drive dangerously.
What you are talking about is completely different and would certainly be viewed differently by the Police etc who would try and accomodate anyone who was in this position. !
