Hi

Potential for me looking like an arse with this but hey ho, got this object, am almost certain it is something to do with photography....I am a n00b at photography so forgive me if its obvious. Also apologies if its nowt to do with photography and is some weird bondage item or something.

Any help?

Looks to me like a grip (and to hold a flashgun above a camera). The thread is probably the right sort (Whitworth bush) that screws in to the base of most camera plates.

Looks like a flash clamp to me? Possibly one of those things that keeps the camera off the top of the top of the camera, ive seen a lot of paparazzi with them but im not sure of the advantage?

Less chance of red eye if the flash is further away from the lens.

Hi Kit,

What Nick said, plus if the camera is in portrait orientation the flash can be repositioned above the camera (like the sun, usually) instead of over to one side.

I had one just like that 20 years ago to hold my Vivitar 283 over my Canon A1 - happy days!
