Coming back from winning a sprint at Loton yesterday, so all fired up, had just got on the M40 with an irritating Audi up my chuff so I did the honerable thing, chucked it down 2 gears and nailed it and waited for the whoosh. There was no whoosh - it was a large bang, clatter, graunch and no drive.

Engine is fine so it's drivetrain related. When you rev the engine in gear the speedo registers so I am guessing diff or half shafts - not been under the car yet.

Does anyone have a "spare" standard diff (I don't want a hydratrack)that they may want to sell me if it turns out to be that. I can't afford a new one or to have it rebuilt and need it fixed for the next sprint at Lydden in 2 weeks.

By the way, my cerb has now won 4 out of 4 sprints that we have entered this year so we are winning the averages and if it stays in 1 piece we are looking good for the season

TIA

Jes

That'll be a nearside drive shaft then.

Speed sensor is on that side I believe.

Thanks Ridds, would snapping one drive shaft mean no drive at all?

More than likely. Depends on your diff type.

Isnt the sensor on the offside (ie drivers side)? Is on mine if I recall correctly...

If one of the drive shafts fails then it might clang about in the wheel arch and cause a load of racket and potential damage? If this happens...presumably the diff will lock up as this is the same affect as the wheel slipping on ice or spinning up and drive will go to both sides? This is assuming total failure of all the boltsis - rare...? or its snapped?

If its the main prop shaft then again it will flop about in the transmission tunnel and again cause a load of racket and potential damage?

How do you know the speedo is working? It was working as you slowed down...? This sould just be the offside wheel turning the drive shaft and hence providing a reading...

Best get under there and have a look mate...and good luck, hope you get it sorted and its not too bad

I can't remember which side it is and it may differ on Hydratrack from normal diff.

I think the shafts can snap just inside the boot so there won;t be much to flail around.

If it were the prop there would be no speedo reading. smile

Drivers side on mine, but I reckon it will be immediately obvious which side broke once you get your head under there! IIRC correctly raceproved have some uprated drive shafts listed.

Yep. Snapped mine clean through, no drive to the other wheel - not as expensive as I thought either.

It snaps at the diff end so there's nothing to be flailing around.

Definately a driveshaft, most likely on the drivers side and probably sheared at the spline nearest the diff.

You'll get very little drive with it like that - or atleast, we did with hydratrack... we still drove from south of bologne to folkstone (with the help of the channel tunnel obviously) to make sure we got it back home without worrying about leaving it in others hands for re-patriation.

We dont have a spare diff, but it may be worth asking TTtim - IIRC he may have one, or if not - try the T350/sag forum, they all swap thiers a fair bit.

Congrats on the incredible run so far Jes too btw, it gives dad/me(!?) something to aim at in future. Its amazing how much pace these cars have with a good enough driver. thumbup

Ah, had a thought - Ceejay has a diff spare still I think, worth asking... I am sure I saw it in the classifieds not long ago (albeit quite pricey!?)

Jes,

If you're stuck, I seem to remember seeing a pair of old driveshafts that came with my cerb when I got it that are lurking in the garage loft. They're for a 4.5 and used, but if you're stuck, I'm near Gatwick.

Cheers

Gents,

You are all stars - it was a driveshaft that had snapped. Mine has a cone diff so no drive at all when one goes.

Clever Trevor sell updated ones for £172.50 plus VAT so I am trying those to hopefully avoid a repeat.

cheers all

Jes

If i were you i would replace both. As sooner or later the other side is going to let go.
