Final speed warning
Discussion
This weekend saw the Bike GP here at Le Mans. Lousy weather, cold, windy but that didn't stop the BIB enjoying themselves immensely. 1366 speeding fines and 53 licences taken off people on the spot for alcohol and drugs. That excludes those who lost their licences for speed alone. I know I've posted in a similar vein before and I would wish to be the last to be a killjoy but - fair warning!
Ah, I omitted to mention that the radar makes an allowance of 10% here, so 140kph on the autoroute will be counted at 126kph. In effect it is safe to run at about 145kph (90mph) all day and not get pulled. Also, I've checked my speedo with the GPS and so can safely run at around 152kph and still be in the 10% safety zone. That's around 95mph to you. Worth checking your speedo if you have a GPS!

The speed limit is 110kph on the motorway if raining, and 130 if dry. Remember the BIB count mist as rain though so watch out in the early morn! On all other roads apart from motorways the limit doesn't change.
I may be wrong on this but did read in an article in France magazine that the limit is reduced on other roads too - I think it was principally those with a 110kph limit that went down. Best to be aware of this, although I have never seen signs posted to confirm it.Well, in theory you are right; it is 100 kph instead of 110 on a dual carriageway (unless marked otherwise of course) and 80kph on a route nationale. However, I have never heard of this being applied in practice. One point I overlooked is bad visibility of 50 metres or less; then the limit is 50kph even on an autoroute!
Sitting in hospital waiting room and just read Auto Express 24th Sept last year.....scary stuff! Articles called "show no merci" le frenchie cop says "no discretion ie 150kph on motorway you will be stopped and fined €135."
181kph = €1500
No insurance = €3750
Forget your license = €15000!
I urge you to leave radar detectors at home don't exceed 140kph and carry your car paperwork, insurance, mot, license etc.

Last year I saw a load of people pulled over and their mates on the 'hard shoulder' behind them waiting for the deed to be done. Me thinks this could be a good reason for having a channel on the old walkie talkies dedicated to warn others of where the BIB are. Of course , being a member of the I.A.M. I would never exceed the speed limit myself
