non-Ferrari engine in a 308
Discussion
For the time being this is all a pipe dream, its just that having seen it there for 7 years, it is likely to be there for another 7 years.
I was thinking more like an NSX engine/gear box - as it offers a touch more power than the original Ferrari engine and would cost less to maintain.

Keep an eye out for something like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ferrari-Mondial-QV-1983_W0QQ...
Ferrari engine would be my first choice...
Although, I would be tempted by the NSX engine/ 'box combo!
- Edited to add: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FERRARI-355-1999-ENGINE-1900... could be cheaper though! *

I daydreamed a similar plan when I saw a 308 with engine damage on ebay a while back....
Alfa v6 3.0 on carbs and use the alfa transaxle - a reasonable 164 is under £1K. Nice and simple, sounds lovely, about 210bhp - more than a 308GTBi.
Or better still save up all the money it would cost for all the other bits and bobs a project like this would cost and buy a 308 in good shape. Love the irony of the MR2 suggestion!
