hi alltogether,

yesterday i drove with a friend´s westfield SE (kit was built around 1989/1990).

ford x-flow and ford 4speed gearbox. interestingwise the reverse gear was back right. all other 4 speed boxes i´ve ever driven are front left.

how comes?

and what gearbox type should this be?

i´ve driven around 15 different cars with a ford 4 speed. have three differnt 4 speed boxes in my storage and all are the same with the reverse front left...so how comes that hthis box is differnt?

Is it a Rocket Box? They are like 4-speed version of the Type 9 aren't they? (albeit pre-dating it)

Escort sport or Cortina/Taunus 1600 "light" box ?

Possibly one of the smaller van boxes?

"Escort sport or Cortina/Taunus 1600 "light" box"

this means? can you be more precise and give the correct "ford-type" for this box, please?

You mean correct as in "Bullet","Rocket","single rail","3 rail" etc;,I'm afraid that you will have to do your own detailed research if the information is that important to you.I do recall that CCC magazine many years ago published a guide to Ford gearboxes but I can't find my copy.

The 1600 as distinct from the later type 2000E gearbox(confusingly there was an earlier gearbox known as 2000E as well as the later type IIRC) was the box fitted to the Cortina 1600 variants,so was a lighter duty item, hence the name, the Escort sport gearbox was fitted to the Escort(1300?) but Caterham used it for a time(it was rather fragile when pushed though).
The van gearboxes are self explanatory, but the 1600 X-flow engine was fitted in Transits,so the gearbox could be from that source.("side loader type")
There are no doubt dozens of Ford part numbers for all the variants but where you will find the relevant information I have no idea,I certainly don't remember where reverse was on past vehicles, isn't that the reason why the shift pattern is marked on the knob ? but I wish you the best of luck finding the relevant information!
