hi there,
after saving up for a few years i now have the funds to buy my first 350z.
as i have a max of £12,000 to spend i seem to be spoilt for choice.
there are a load of imports out there which look very tempting but a few people
have told me to keep away from them and stay with the uk spec cars. please help

I wouldnt worry too much about imports, some insurance companies have issues with them but they are fine.
It can be a little difficult working out which spec they are. Ten again, some have lots of extra goodies. Make sure the sat nav and sterio have been changed they, they dont work over here.

Im pretty sure this is bulls
t.I was in the same position about 8 weeks ago, looked at and drove 5 different cars - including 1 import. Ended up buying a Gun Metal GT Coupe, UK car with 50k with every option, Bluetooth, Sat Nav, Parking sensors, power fold mirrors, and being a GT it has all the other good bits like Bose, Alzean leather and Brembo's - all for a shade over £10k as it needed tyres and a service, definately a buyers market at the moment so done worry about walking away from a car if the price isnt right as there are plenty more.
I pretty much ruled out an import after driving one, didnt feel as nice, the ride was harsh (even more so that the UK car!) and it was an auto - trying to find a manual one with all the UK GT toys was hard and for the money you are actually saving I personally dont think its worth it - you may as well spend an extra £500-£1k and get a UK car. The UK cars look better IMHO, and if you get a GT your laughing. You have a healthy budget which will get you a low mileage GT - so why bother with an import? If your budget was £8-9k then JDM defo - but it isnt :-)
2 months in and loving mine still, been on a 900 mile round trip and she was awesome - I managed to get 31.8Mpg over 350 miles. Will never get bored of the noise in every gear, especially between 3-4k rpm.
