hmm... 15mpg AT BEST!!
budget £3k for an engine rebuild every 50k !!
fustrating is not the word...
they've got to be one of the most gorgeous modern cars around, and I could get one for the same price as my mx5! they're fast - 260bhp, very good handling, light, small, and gorgeous again... but I can't live with those kind of running costs...
now put a scooby engine in an rx7.... all the best bits of an rx7 with a similar power/size engine, that works... taht would be awesome!!

They're not nearly as bad as that once the stock twin turbos are ditched and replaced with a proper single turbo. Plus then you get to turn up the happy dial to 350hp or more
The stock system seems expressly designed to cause massive overheating and engine failure. (I assume we're talking about the third gens here)I've heard they can just go at any point... and you need to keep an eye on the oil level cos not bothering is a good way of increasing the chances of it going bang.
Not sure an impreza engine (particularly the jap import version to match the rx7's power) is that good... 5th cylinder (or something, i forget the term) always seems to go cos the engine really requires 100RON... love the look tho.

I've got a 3rd gen twin turbo (FD) mazdaspeed rx7 type rs and it's a lot of fun. Had the car a couple of months and now and it still scares me 
Speaking to other uk owners, the engine reliability isn't half as bad as people think. You have to bear in mind that the engine is essentially racing derived and in a high state of tune (as standard) - will take the car 0-60 in around 5 secs and onto 170mph.
Fuel economy isn't too bad either providing your not city driving which isn't fun in a car with a heavy clutch. It's not much worse than my old v6 and certainly no worse than something like a TVR. Besides, if you buy a car like an rx7 and worry about the fuel economy then you shouldn't be buying one in the first place!
There are several well respected uk rotary engine specialists (re:worx, jimmy's etc.) and you are best of taking a car to them for servicing and tuning.
If you are interested in getting an rx7 my advice would be to do your homework. Make sure you know plenty about the history of the car (i.e. has it had an engine rebuild or is it due one etc.). Also, although very tunable, any modifications should be done to rotarys carefully, ensuring that the engine doesn't run lean (this is a bad thing for a rotary). So if the car has been modified, get someone who knows rx7's to check it out first if you are not sure.
If you want more info, I'd recommend the uk owners clubs such as FDUK or MazdaRotary club (www.mazdarotaryclub.com)
Everyone is very friendly and lots of the rotary specialists are on the mazdarotary club forums.

GTO's are rediculously heavy.. and well known for handling something like a soggy blamonge(sp?).. hold out for the Supra!

easy to say.. but I would LOVE an FD, but where I could reasonably easily afford the car itself, I don't think I could afford to run it.. VERY frustrating!
In the end, I might just say SOD-IT, and buy one from Jimmy's etc with a 1-year warranty, and sell it at the end of the year if it's been too expensive to run?!?!??! heart says
