I saw a MK2 Polo last night, 1.3 with over 120bhp (loads of mods). 0-60 is just over 6s and it ran 1/4 mile at Santa Pod in around 14.6s. The owner has now added 2 NOS bottles and hopes to lower the 1/4 mile time to low 13s.

I have a 1.2 65bhp Polo 9n and was wondering if there's anything I could do to make it faster! I'm looking for any ideas (e.g. engine swap or what modifications I can do to the engine!)?

I know most of the responses I'm going to get are "buy a faster car" but I'm happy to gradually increase the power of mine. Long term budget would be about £5000!

So what would you suggest?!

Buy a G40.

They have about 120bhp standard. Not great to drive without suspension work though.

You're prepared to spend £5k on a 1.2 Polo?

Engine swap the only way forward IMO.

Which engine? Would it be easy to put in a 1.8t from the 9N3? Do you have a rough idea of how much it would cost to swap the engines and all the other bits that I would need to change?

Thanks

Im assuming your quite young so insurance is a big issue..

I would just leave the Polo as it is, its pointless spending 5k on it also insurance will hurt once you start modding it. I say save up your 5k and then go out and buy something fast, theres a lot of decent and interesting cars to choose from for 5k.

No idea on how easy an engine change would be, but a 1.8t is going to be a much bigger engine i'd have thought, so you're going to probably not only upgrade the engine, but the suspension, brakes to cope with extra power etc etc.

You won't see much change from your £5k, and you'll be left with a car worth less than what you've spent on it.

Buy a £5k kit car and keep the polo for every day use biggrin

Save the £5k, buy something properly quick. Stop pratting about with that 1.2litre 3-pot shopping trolley, for God's sake man.

Why is that so cheap??? I thought S3's with that sort of mileage would fetch more like 10-11k?? Or is it because of the age?

Don;t bother with the Polo, get some NCB and just buy a G40 or an S3 if they are that cheap!

I'd shove a 16.16valve engine from a Lupo/Polo GTI - 125bhp and reliable - seen it shoved in MK2 polo's no probs

+1.

When I was 19 I worked with a lad who had spent literally thousands on modifying the engine on his 1.0 FIAT. He was the envy of the other owners according to himself.

You have never seen a young man as pleased as me when I effortlessly overtook him in my Mx5 which had cost a fraction of what he had pissed away.

Bide your time mate. Failing that buy an MX5.

I think its because its the old shape, its still expensive compared to most nine year old hatchbacks.

Please do not piss away 5k on modding a Polo.
Doing this may just be the biggest automotive mistake you ever make.

I saw an '07-plate Polo GTi 150 at auction a couple of weeks back. Had no idea it even existed previously.

Must be a cracker with a 150bhp motor! Biggest bhp in its class?

Agree entirely.

As a youngster, there are definately some things I wish people had said to me

"don't be such a cocktard"

Seriously, save your wedge. A Polo will always be a polo, no matter what. Okay it may something special under the hood (and sleepers are ace) but I just don't think a Polo is the right car.

Think what you'd like from a car
  • rear wheel drive?
  • 4 doors ?
  • convertible ?
etc etc

Then do a what car thread, detailing what you want, and your budget. See what people come up with.....

Biggest mistake i've EVER made in my entire life? Spending £14k on a new Megane Hatchback, when I could have bought (at the time) a very nice Lotus Carlton frown Oh well.

Love this - a car with a nice 1.2ltr shopping trolly engine in it. Then this numpty is willing to spend £5k on it /engine swap to make it faster....

Oh my god. For £5k you can buy a Civic Type R 197BHP and in the grand scheme of things newish. That will still be worth £2.5k in a further 3 odd years time. Whereas your car will possibly be unsaleable or only appealing to a tiny number of people. And of course the insurance on that will be far more than it would be on say a CTR.

Corsa VXR is 200+ bhp

You can get a Fiesta with 180

Fiat 500 with 160

Thats to name but a few, sounds like the Polo is actually 'low' on power.
Corsa VXR is "only" 192bhp, but £500 or so will see you over the 200bhp mark. Theres a couple going about with 300+bhp, linky http://www.ukcorsa-d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11... to the regal test car running 310bhp, dyno read out and a small list of things that've been done to it, I think it's around £5k spent on the car with the brake upgrade, fully adjustable suspension, LSD and all the engine mods. Crazy car.

310bhp with 1.9 bar of boost in a Corsa... I bet that was an interesting conversation with his insurance company.

I'll bet it's almost undriveable.
