A thread by dirty boy prompted thoughts of my own work experience and got me thinking about what the rest of us did or are doing or planning to do. I did a week at a well known Ferrari dealer in the East Midlands and loved every minute - even got invited to the customer only track day at Donington Park. I wanted to go into the motor industry at the time and this I did but for the past 6 years have been in transport/distribution. I can't think of any moments of stupidity whilst there but I'll come back to you should I remember any!

So, over to you...

ETA: Title should be "Your" not "You" - just call me stoopid.

I wanted to do something computer related, so I ended up placed at an "IT Training Centre" in Reading.

It wasnt what I was expecting.

I learned how to repair fruit machines.

I did work experience at Hampshire County Museum services when I was at school. There were loads of interesting parts to it but a day in the Taxidermy department was by far the best.

Had a work experience lad in safety training yesterday. He thought it was great fun using dummy CS and batons and seeing how we trained. Beats sitting in an office for him.

I went to a garage - was taken out on a test drive and left miles from the garage. Got a lift back hrs later. The DP found out and went mad as i was only 15 or so and his responsibility. The mechanic who left me (was a cock anyway) got a final written warning and had to apologise. Made him think twice - i just laughed at him grovelling in front of the staff!

At school I did a week in a residential unit for people with learning disabilities. I just gardened with amiable loonies. The owner had a bar in the lounge and the last hour of each day tended to be a bit of blur. It was great.

He had a lovely V12 XJS too.

I did two weeks at a Solicitors, as part of that experience I sat in the same room as a convicted killer.

He seemed such a nice chap too.

I did a week with a GP. Highlight was watching him remove a tangerine sized cyst from underneath an old lady's scalp.

I now work in IT.

I did a couple of weeks at JCB special products years ago. (design and development centre for their smaller vehicles) Very interesting stuff back than and what got me into R&D.

Just had a guy in where I work now for a day last week.

We have our PC's set to GMT all the time due to some of the programs that we run.

The little git thought he'd help by putting them all to BST..... Screwed up 3 days worth of data that we collect.

Cheers pal. laugh

I had the fun of a month at an architects office as I originally wanted to work as one.

Learned shortly after that the pay was crap and not worth the effort unless you got into a big firm somewhere and even then that was remote.

Plus the 7 years of studying to do technical drawings of buildings put me off.

Back in the 1970s I did two weeks work experience in the production office of a factory.
Midway through my first morning I was surprised to hear an alarm bell ring, within a couple of minutes I found out that the shop floor workers were walking out due to altered work place practices.
It transpired that they were going on strike because a hot drinks machine had been installed to replace the lady with the tea trolley.

I did some Guitar teaching, with my old teacher (who incidentally i think posts on here somewhere)

Was brilliant fun, basically just arsed about for a week playing guitar all day long with some ridiculously good guitarists - anyone that plays will understand how good that is.....

Worked for a week at a Pharmaceutical company in Newbury. It was crap and very dull.

Possibly because I'd already worked in my folks' office every summer holiday for the previous 3 years.
