Just went to start my 206 this morning and it stalled straight away. now it starts but is chugging like a tractor and coughing out smoke from the exhaust.

Even slightly touching the gas the engine makes horrible tappets..

i know its most likely something internal and will likely be knackered but can anyone shed abit of light as im currious to what and how much its going to lighten my wallet.

have you dipped the oil?
i've come across 3or4 where the cam has snapped but yours would not run if this had occured (very unlikely anyway)

As you sound to be fairly in experienced .. why not just call the AA/RAC if you are a member and ask them to check it out..

Does not sound like you should be running that engine to find out what noises it's making..

oils fine yer and the dip stick is nornal..... the mystery deepens as it started fine now iv just tried and the tappets have gone.. however i took it for a spin round the carpark and the revs are dropping unusually bellow idal when changing gear making the engine try and stall. However it doesnt stall...

Any ideas.

With a better description of the problem...it might be possible. But at present we are only stabbing in the dark.

And with a French car, it could be a multitude of things.

From something as simple as plugs/leads, or coil pack, to as extreme as a faulty ecu.

cam belt slipped would be my guess but bit hard to figure out the problem without hearing it , check tdc see if all lines up .

turns out there is water in the ecu.. some good old gaelic seals have failed and has left a list of error codes as log as my arm. looks like and expensive fix for what is essentially the problem of abit of failed rubber seal.

I guess the garage want several hundred £££ to change the ECU and calibrate it? As it has run okay since you first had the fault, is sounds to me like it should be quite posible to dry the ECU out, seal it and replace. If they insist the old ECU really is dead, look at the price of a reconditioned one. they are MUCH cheaper.

The other option is to clean the ECu PCB with some PCB cleaner. Maplin do it
I tried it on remote which where dropped into a puddle or cup of tea and usualy the remote works again

There are different types of pcb cleaner, in as much as some will melt flux, pcb waterproofing laquer and some plastics, and the ordinary isopropyl alcohol (IPA) cleaner which will safely remove water.

Its definately worth cleaning it out and giving it a flush with IPA. Had a lot of success with this on 'accidently' immersed medical electronics.

I know some of the Peugeots have an issue with water travelling up the temperature sender wire and into the ECU.This could only happen on a French car- they've run out of normal electrical faults and are now having to invent new ones!

Drying out the ECU would be my suggestion too.

Water ingress also happen to German cars, talk to Audi owner's about water in the passenger foot well and convenience unit!
