Ok, so I collect my new laptop tomorrow, Its running Vista.

Are they any issues with vista i should be aware of? I am thinking about flattening the HDD and reinstalling XP Pro.

Any views would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you can get drivers for the laptop, definitely go for XP over Vista. Alternatively you can wait for Windows 7 (which I'm about to install and have a play with tonight as it happens) and which is reported to be a significant leap forward (a first for Microsoft, it must be said!).

If the machine is specifically designed for Vista then it should be absolutely fine. I use Vista every day for my work, and it's totally ok if you have the machine for it - anything with "dual core" or "core 2 duo" written on it should be fine.

At the very least, give it a try for a month or so before swapping it for XP. Chances are it will grow on you.

Agree with you on that - so much so that I seldom use XP these days .

Why?

I don't know anyone who has any problems with Vista on a new machine.

What is this Windows 7 you speak so highly about? scratchchin

The processor is a Celeron M575, but ideally i want a Dual core. (can i upgrade?)

The laptop will mostly be used for web-based working, some mild photo-shoppery and small scale music production, and DJ recording.

Cheers for your answers so far. smile

Nope, chances are you'll learn to hate it's limitations and how poorly laid out things are. And then there's the search rofl

I gave it a fair chance, learned my way around, gave it my best shot but after a lengthy familiarisation curve I've realised it's the modern equivalent of ME.

Suspend on my lappy is utterly ace, other than that it's bloatware. I can achieve any given task quicker on XP.

My Vista searches just fine; included the typeof search HRG describes. And I haven't asked it to index any drives.

Go search a network drive and see what happens if you don't alter the default settings wink

If you can't get rid of Vista, at least diable UAC. Life is not worth living with UAC enabled, we typically only live 70-80 years after all.

I think you have bigger worries with it being a Celeron, rather than worrying about people ridiculing you for using Vista.

Vista is good for one thing - getting you in the habit of frequently backing up your hard drive...hehe

To be fair, although I've gone right off the UI I haven't seen a BSOD since I started running it, including running the 64 bit version on a TranquilT7 with only 2GB of RAM yikes

UAC can drive a man insane. I've tried to like Vista, despite early misgivings. However, those misgivings were fully justified. It is indeed Milennium Edition's ugly step-daughter.

When I saw how similar W7 is to Vista, I was prepared to hate it. However, an evening spent playing with it on a mate's machine has shown that it has the potential to be very good indeed (perhaps XP's foxier younger sister if we're using freaky analogies?).

I've just got round to installing it and will report back later. For those who aren't familiar with it, it's the newest OS from Microsoft due for public release later this year I believe. It certainly seems to have avoided all the guff that frustrates about Vista.

Do me a personal favour, have a play with the search engine (preferably on a network drive) without altering the default settings and see how it behaves.

So many generalist statements. So few hard facts.

My PC runs 24/7 - not just switchd on, but actually doing stuff.
I reboot it once every week or so for no reason other than wanting to.

It has never failed. Never caused me a second's concern.

I know 6 people with Vista on laptops - pre-intalled. None have any complaint.

Would love to know why pople think it's so bad. Otherwise I can't put comments down to anything other than Luddite-users.

If Vista is so good why do we need W7? It's solid, no mistake there, in fact from a stability point of view it's MS's best offering by far but the UI sucks donkey dicks.

Network and sharing centre? rofl do me a favour. See how many more clicks it takes to check the status of your connections. Add or remove programs? Sorry Sir, we've filed that under P for Programs And Features.

Do you support desktops remotely? You have to turn off the Desktop Window Manager to get reasonable performance unless you can get to the machine on RDP.

In a nutshell under the bonnet is great but the UI is fked. And don't even get me started on the Office 'Ribbon' rofl I remember MS presentations where they extolled the virtues of File Edit etc. and assured us it was why their software was more user friendly.

My users have better things to do than spend their paid day learning where features have been moved to, no backward compatibility = Fail.

'Luddite' user couldn't be further from the truth. I really don't care how long Vista's been running on your machine, you won't make me like it. The UI is a complete cock-arse job and it's horrendous to use. I'm not one to form preconceptions about something - I will actually USE it before deciding whether I like it or not - hence my willingness to try W7.

Vista is a steaming pile of badly-designed turd IMO and I wouldn't have it near one of my computers. I may still go back to XP (if we're playing the 'uptime' game, mine's been running non-stop for over a fortnight now with no issues at all - it only went off tonight so I could install W7 on a new, fresh drive).
