My starter motor is knackered, and I set about replacing it last night with the one I bought off ebay a month ago. I then found out it's not the right part (very similar, but the bolt pattern is different).

I don't think I'm going to get much luck getting the part swapped now, and I was thinking: seeing as what is broken is the gear driving the flywheel (spins freely on its shaft), is it easy to interchange the bits inside the starter?

It's for an Audi 80 from 1991, so they are a bit hard to come by in the 2 scrap yards around here, and seem really expensive on ebay, when I can find them...

What do we reckon?

I'd have thought most motor factors could supply a re-con unit, or I'm sure there are dozens of places around the country who could re-con it.

Or the likes of Eurocarparts for a new one ?

depending on engine code there are varios other vag ones that will fit , failing that drill new holes .

do a search on vagcat will give you the vag part numbers to what others will fit

most places do a reconditioned unit with your old one taken in px .

also try gsf never had a problem dealing with them .
