MNR VORTX or MAC1 Type 9R?
Discussion
Hi All,
I am a newbie to the kit car world but have for a long time fancied a bike powered kit car of the caterham style, sadly not caterham money!
I am looking for advice and experiences as to where I should start, I have been looking at the MNR VORTX & the MAC1 Type 9R and am looking to buy something pre-built as I know if I embark upon the build myself it will never happen and I will end up with a garage full of bits for a lifetime!
Any advice or guidance on which route or alternatives to the ones I have been looking at would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Mick

Hi Mick I bought a MAC1 Type9R in Dec 08. Mines a late 04. I was very new to the scene as well.
Im really pleased with mine although the first owner was a plonk and did some silly things which ive had to take back to MAC to get sorted.
The guys at MAC are fantastic with service, help and repairs. When you get one of these its nice to know your not on your own if you get me
As for quality and spec id put it right up there; GAZ adjustable shocks, digidash, carbon dash, bonnet, mudguards savage switches etc
As for driving id say these are very similar to MK. I can only go by forum comments etc
The latest MNR look fantastic with the new front grill. I know JRM Rossi on here is selling his with freshly fitted sticky rubber and a rollcage just fitted, Ive seen that and its a clean example and about the same age as mine with a ninja lump
As others said though try and get a spin in a few and id think about what company offers best help at hand

I was in the same position recently and decided to go for the MNR Vortx RT+
with the new style front, powered by R1 its very quick! I just love the look of it, look like a modern take on a "7"
A pal of mine is a development engineer for Caterham for over 16 years and commented on how well designed and the quality of the build ( its factory built )
It has carbon dash etc and really turns heads and all i get is positive comments on it.

With the greatest respect to any MAC#1 owners here, I looked at both cars and spoke to many owners of both. It was pointed out by a number of people that the MAC#1 didn't have the best welds, I'm sure they're fine and adequate but for me, when you're flying along a country road, you really want to be safe in the knowledge that the welding is top notch.
This may well have been improved, all I'm saying is that I'd pay particular attention to both kits and see which you feel most comfortable with.
I also believe that the geometry on the MNR is much better.
Finally, you ought to visit both workshops, meet the people who will build the cars.
I haven't bought a kit car yet, but MNR is always top of the list.
Edit: Also check out Locost Builders
